The Nose4Wood project, run jointly by the Lapland University of Applied Sciences and Finland's Natural Resources Institute, is exploring whether it can train dogs to sniff out a pair of fungi that together cause 50 million Euros (US$54 million) worth of spruce and pine losses in Finland annually. It can take as long as a year to train the dogs, who come from all over Finland. So far, the Lapponian Herder breed (pictured above) is one of the best at s the task.
