An interesting thing happened to us a few weeks back: We were invited to an industry event, and the host remembered us from the year before. She thanked us for being returning guests.
That alone felt nice—to be remembered and acknowledged. But something even better happened a few days after the event concluded…she followed up with an email offering us a special discount for the following year, with the hopes of encouraging a “three-peat” (three years of attendance in a row).
This gesture seemed perfectly timed to make us think about ways that businesses can make grateful gestures part of their overall outreach. It’s not difficult to do, it doesn’t cost much, and it goes a long way to demonstrating your desire to build real relationships with the people who determine your success.

We held a brainstorming meeting to discuss a few ways that companies could show their clients and customers thanks—ideas that might be applicable to a wide number of companies. They included:
-
Start simple: Always say thank you! Whether it’s thanks for visiting, thanks for inquiring, thanks for purchasing…it goes so much further than you imagine!
-
Give back: Actions speak louder than words. You can demonstrate thanks with a handwritten card, a small gift, or a discount code for a return visit.
-
Add value: Reward loyalists with special opportunities, access, or deals. Creating a special club or membership especially for high-volume engagement with your brand can make people feel acknowledged for the effort they put into supporting you.
-
Get personal: A direct phone call can break through the noise. Hearing from a leader at your company, who is taking time out of their busy day, can really make an impact.
-
Find excuses: If someone purchases something from you, that’s an obvious chance to express thanks. But what are other interactions that might warrant it, where it doesn’t need to wait until they’re converted? Leaving a thoughtful comment, posting a review, or subscribing to your newsletter are fantastic reasons to apply gratitude during the more exploratory steps of the relationship.
Of course, we’re happy to help you come up with custom, creative ideas for your company to show thanks—so please feel free to reach out and get started! In the meantime, please allow us to express genuine thanks for reading, following, and supporting Mad 4 Marketing.
