What is Lent?

What are your priorities in life right now? Lent is an invitation to rearrange your priorities—to focus on what matters most and leave behind what matters least.

Lent is the season where the Church prepares for Easter. Starting with Ash Wednesday, Lent spans 40+ days until Holy Thursday.

In the fourth chapter of Matthew, Jesus spends 40 days in the desert, fasting, praying, and preparing for his mission. Lent is your opportunity for that same focus.

Lent is your invitation to take your spiritual life seriously.

Lent is the perfect time to form life-giving habits and abandon self-destructive habits.

Lent is your chance to discover the abundant life Jesus invites us to at Easter.

Take these 40 days to explore God’s dream for your life and it will change everything. Are you ready?

When Does Lent Start?

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

The season of Lent begins this coming Wednesday!

Ash Wednesday

Wednesday

March 5, 2025

MASSES

12 noon

8:00 pm

Both Masses will be at the rectory chapel

MASS in Spanish ( Misa en Español ) is at 6pm in the Lower Church.

Additionally, at 3pm, following our Divine Mercy chaplet prayers there will be an Ash Wednesday prayer service.

The distribution of ashes will take place during these liturgies.

The time has now come in the Church year for the solemn observance of Lent, the great central act of the redemption of the human race by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

In the Roman Rite, the beginning of the forty days of penance is marked with the austere symbol of ashes which is used in this liturgy. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us.

As the priest applies the ashes to a person's forehead, he speaks the words: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

Alternatively, the priest may speak the words, "Repent and believe in the Gospel ."

Ash Wednesday is a day of Fasting & Abstinence

Regulations for Fasting & Abstinence:

Ash Wednesday is one of two yearly days of obligatory fasting and abstinence for Roman Catholics, along with Good Friday.

Fasting means a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but they are not to equal that of a full meal.

The rule of abstinence means no eating meat on Ash Wednesday.

Beginning on March 7 and all the Fridays of Lent.

6:00 pm Les Estaciones de la Cruz (Stations of the Cross in Spanish

7:00 pm Holy Mass (English)

8:15pm Stations of the Cross (English)

Fr Joseph is urging everyone to take part in Fr Josh Johnson's " Set Free" Action Plan for Lent. This lenten journey will begin on Ash Wednesday, March 5. Download the Ascension Press app on your phone (it takes 2 minutes ) and you will receive daily lenten reflections.

Our Lenten Companion:

Fr. Josh Johnson

"SET FREE"

Daily Lenten Reflections to Overcome the Seven Deadly Sins

This Lent, Fr. Josh will offer daily video reflections in the Ascension App as part of the program Set Free: Daily Lenten Reflections to Overcome the Seven Deadly Sins.

Participants will learn how the seven deadly sins underlie every other sin they struggle with, and discover strategies to overcome and root out each of the deadly sins at its source.

Set Free builds upon Fr. Josh’s new book, Pocket Guide to Overcoming the Seven Deadly Sins, also published by Ascension.

The Catechism identifies the seven deadly sins as wrathslothgluttonylustgreedenvy, and pride.

These vices are “deadly” because they are the fountainheads from which all the other sins in our lives originate.

This action plan will help you learn the seven deadly sins—what they are and how they appear in our lives.

It will prepare you for Lent by outlining specific fasts you can use to combat each one of the sins and grow in discipline and trust in God.

Finally, it will show you how to pray with scripture and surrender your sin to God.

It ends with a powerful, step-by-step examination of conscience, which will help you have a deeper and truly profound experience of the sacrament of confession.

How It Works

Step 1: Join the waitlist by downloading the Action Plan today

Step 2: Download and subscribe to the Ascension app

Step 3: On March 5 (Ash Wednesday), you'll get notified that the program is live

How to Challenge Yourself This Lent | LITTLE BY LITTLE | Fr Columba Jordan CFR

The meaning of the word sacrifice is to "make holy." This Lent we are offered the opportunity to let go of our control and accept the difficulties and sufferings that come to us with grace.

Today, Fr Mark-Mary invites us to let go and allow this Lent to fuel our growth in interior freedom and sacrificing control.

St. Ignatius laid out 14 rules for discernment in the spiritual life. Fr. Timothy Gallagher breaks those open for you in this conversation with Christopher West.
