The school will host a gathering from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Visitors will receive guided tours of the building from current students. They will be greeted by the school’s principal and a current teacher who is also a graduate of School Without Walls. Alumni will go to assigned classrooms where they will participate in activities with current students. They will also take a large group photo forming the letters SWW, items will be placed in a time capsule, and then kept in the school building where it will be opened in 50 years.

On Saturday, May 28, the Brighton Buckland Lodge will host music, storytelling, games, and activities.

School Without Walls currently serves students in grades nine through twelve. This non-traditional educational setting began in 1971 and is one of the oldest schools of its kind in the country that focuses on project based, student centered learning and performance based assessments. Our program stresses intellectual challenges, the exploration of today’s society, structured and independent learning projects, community service, self-discipline, and a safe learning environment.

Instruction at School Without Walls is designed to lower the walls between school and community, students and teachers, and classrooms and the outside world. This is accomplished by requiring students to work with community professionals, small classes, ongoing teacher-student conferences, and allowing students to pursue issues and interests under the guidance of teacher monitoring and classroom instruction. School Without Walls is recognized as a national leader in educational reform.
