Dear Gleneagles Golfer,
If you happen to come by Gleneagles GC today you are invited to attend an event that has not happened since 1962 when Mayor George Christopher dedicated our golf course to all of San Francisco.
In 2015 Mayor Ed Lee is as committed to golf as any mayor in the history of San Francisco.
An avid golfer, Mayor Lee has consistently supported municipal golf, be it saving Sharp Park, boosting The First Tee, bringing PGA Tour events to Harding Park and now dedicating the Gleneagles Training Academy which will be named in honor of Laborers leader Mario De La Torre--a man who helped working families thrive in San Francisco.
The training academy has much to offer San Francisco, which in turn makes our golf course more important to City leaders. First, it will create career opportunities for people looking to get into golf course maintenance or the construction trades. Secondly, the academy will help us address 40 years of deferred maintenance, improving the golfing experience.
This idea has been several years in the making, a collaboration of public, private, non-profit and community stakeholders.
I believe, it is the best of what makes us San Franciscans.
If you are coming out to the golf course today at 4 p.m. expect to see some new faces. One of them will be Mayor Ed Lee, the First Golfer of San Francisco.
For Golf in the City,
Tom
Tom A. Hsieh
Note: The golf course will be open but out of respect for our honored guests, the tee boxes will be closed during the dedication ceremony. Parking will be limited to Sunnydale Ave.
