THE BEST Trail Angel site
A reflection from our friend, The Rev. Libby Wade, interim rector at our partner church in Stockbridge:

Last week, a team from St. Paul’s offered radical hospitality as “Trail Angels” on the Appalachian Trail in Sheffield. “Trail Angels” is a ministry begun several years ago by Christ Trinity and 1st Congregational Churches in Sheffield. According to several of the 20+ hikers who stopped by, this is THE BEST Trail Angel site so far on their journey from the foothills of the Appalachians in north Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. Their eyes lit up when they saw we had cell phone chargers and chairs with backs. They were eager to enjoy grilled burgers and hot dogs and surprised that we even had veggie burgers. In addition to the supplies provided by Christ Trinity and 1st Congregational, our group brought boiled eggs, apples, coleslaw, limeade, and tea.

Several hikers spoke about the effect of last week’s extreme heat and the difficulty of finding water along the trail, something we offered in abundance. I marveled at how much gear could be stuffed into one backpack, as I wondered how one decides what’s absolutely necessary and what possessions can be left behind. Could I manage for months with only what I could carry on my back? What a challenge that would be! My day beside the trail resonated with Jesus’ admonition to the disciples in one of our recent Gospels: “Be on your guard against all kinds of greed: for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” Come to church as we wrestle with passages such as this.

Libby also took the great photograph of all the hiking gear above. If you have reflections on serving as a Trail Angel at our AT tent, or particularly good photographs, please share them with us.

We are holding our AT Trail Angels picnic celebration on August 14th at 12:30. Please sign-up online to let us know that you are coming.
