Meanwhile, in our schools...
PJ's + a new RIF book = cozy good fun!
Polk Elementary

There's nothing like a new book, especially when you can read it in your jammies.  Just ask the kids at Polk Elementary in the City of Alexandria!  RIF of NOVA supplied the books, and the school supplied the event:  Pajama Day-Curl Up with a RIF Book.  From the looks on these faces, it's even better when you can display your new book selection with a couple of friends!

Mount Vernon Woods

PJ-clad first graders at Mount Vernon Woods in Fairfax County looked for just the perfect book during Pajama Day in December.  RIF school liaison Brooke Williams shared a reading of Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas while the children consulted with each other about just which RIF book to choose!
For 5th graders at Yorkshire Elementary in Prince William County...

...a camping trip was the theme for the school's RIF book distribution.  The highlight of the day was a visit by a Prince Wiliiam County Park Service ranger.  As you can see, there were dozens of questions!

And then the children settled down for some tent-side reading with a good RIF book.  The best news at Camp Read-A-Lot:  The children could read in peace because there were no mosquitoes!
RIF Board News...It's a Family Tradition
JJ (Justina) Head and her mom Gloria Johnson are more than a mother-daughter duo. Both serve on the RIF of NOVA board -- JJ as co-president and Gloria as RIF area chair for Arlington County Schools.  Joined by JJ's two daughters, the family works together "to ensure that less-fortunate children have the opportunity to choose new books to call their own."  For the full story on this multi-generational RIF of NOVA family, please go to:  http://www.rif.org/blog/a-family-tradition/.
Did you know?
  • The only behavior measure that correlates significantly with reading scores is the number of books in the home.
  • An analysis of a national data set of nearly 100,000 U.S. schoolchildren found that access to printed materials--and not poverty--is the "critical variable affecting reading acquisition."
  • Even a child who hails from a home with 25 books will, on average, complete two more years of school than would a child from a home without any books at all.
