St. Mary of Egypt & Saints of the Day:

On the Fifth Sunday of Lent the Orthodox Church commemorates our Righteous Mother Mary of Egypt. The feast day of Saint Mary of Egypt is April 1, however, she is also commemorated on this Sunday due to her recognition by the Church as a model of repentance. Our holy mother Mary was born in Egypt. She had left her parents at the age of twelve to go to Alexandria, where she spent the next seventeen years in debauchery and the greatest profligacy. Living on charity and linen-weaving, she nevertheless offered her body to any man, not being forced to it by dire necessity as were so many poor women, but as though she were consumed by the fire of a desire that nothing was able to appease, to continue click here

Saint Mark was Bishop of Arethusa in Syria. In the days of Saint Constantine the Great, Saint Mark, moved with divine zeal, destroyed a temple of the idols and raised up a church in its stead. When Julian the Apostate reigned, in 361, as the pagans were now able to avenge the destruction of their temple, Saint Mark, giving way to wrath, hid himself; but when he saw that others were being taken on his account, he gave himself up. Having no regard to his old age, they stripped him and beat his whole body, cast him into filthy sewers, and pulling him out, had children prick him with their iron writing-pens. Then they put him into a basket, smeared him with honey and a kind of relish of pickled fish, and hung him up under the burning sun to be devoured by bees and wasps. But because he bore this so nobly, his enemies repented, and unloosed him.

Youth Sermon 3/22/26

There are many ways that we can announce wonderful events in our life, we can call, text, share a post/update, and yes even send something through snail mail. Yet this week we once again celebrate the Greatest News that humankind needed to hear.

What do we do now with this Good News?

Main Sermon 3/22/26

Today on this the 4th Sunday of Great Lent, we hear about a young man (who was brought to Christ by his father), who suffered with foaming of the mouth, grinding of teeth, what would be diagnosed today as a form of epilepsy. We then hear in a dialogue the father of the child state to Christ “I believe, help my unbelief”.

What does this event in the ministry of our Lord have to do with us on our Lenten Journey?

Why couldn’t the disciples heal the young man?

What does Christ tell His disciples?

Youth Sermon 3/15/26

On this 3rd Sunday of Great Lent, the Church places the focus and offers the support of the Holy Cross to her faithful.

Is the Cross something we just wear around our neck?

Is it just something to do before we kiss an icon?

Main Sermon 3/15/26

The Church has been battling an enemy (the devil) from day one. Though the enemy has many weapons that it uses to hurt and damage our relationship with Christ and each other, the Church offers all of her faithful a weapon the not only defeated the enemy, but also defeated death.

This is the Cross and it is the Church’s most powerful weapon for those who believe in it!

+PROSPHORO+

Bread has been the emblem of God’s providence for us, throughout humanity’s history. Both physical (bread as food) and spiritual - the επιούσιον (epiousion) or “supersubstantial” bread of the Lord’s prayer, the bread of Holy Communion.

In the Orthodox Christian church, the pinnacle of our worship is union with Christ, both spiritually but also physically, by consuming the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Since the Last Supper, before every Divine Liturgy, one or more of the faithful prepare and bring bread to church to be used as the Body of Christ in the Eucharist. The Orthodox church is liturgical. For those of us who bake prosphoro, the liturgy begins as we prepare to bake!

Prosphoro is an offering to God, made from His material gifts to us, and prepared lovingly and prayerfully.

A special website is available to share with the faithful this ‘proper’ method of preparation of the holy gift according to the Greek Orthodox tradition. Please click here to learn how to bake this beautiful offering.
