Saints Celebrated Today

The woman with the issue of blood that was healed by the Lord and is recorded in the Gospels, has by tradition (Acts of Pilate) come to be known as Veronica the Haimorrhousa (Bleeder). Though many doubtful medieval traditions surround her life (such as Veronica's Veil), what we know from ancient sources are the following.

On July 12th we commemorate our Venerable Father Paisios the New the Athonite, who was perfected in peace in 1994.

Venerable Paisios (Enzepidis), the much-wondrous and much-famed, was born in Farasa of Cappadocia on the 25th of July in 1924 from Christian parents, taking the name Arsenios after the venerable Arsenios of Cappadocia. Later he came with his parents to Greece, settling in Konitsa of Epirus, distinguishing himself as a child for his reverence and faith towards God.

Did you know that you can light a Virtual Candle from your computer?

YOU CAN!!!

Simply click on the picture and you will be taken to our website where you can light virtual candles. There are 3 easy steps:

Take your computer mouse over the candles on the table.
Click on a candle to pick it up and bring it the the virtual flame.
Light your candle and hover over the candlestand until the base is highlighted, click on your mouse and the candle will be placed in the virtual sand!

We thank the Library/Museum Committee for overseeing the setup of the online program and of course the Internet Ministries Department of the Archdiocese who is able to make this happen!

GROWING OUR SACRAMENTAL FAMILY – Our Cathedral Family will be growing with the upcoming Chrismation Service for Jake DeLuca. The Chrismation Service will take place on Sunday, July 19 during the Divine Liturgy (immediately prior to Holy Communion). We ask that all Parish Family members be with us on this day to witness, pray and welcome Jake who will be a full member of the Orthodox Faith!

SAINT PAISIOS SHOWING IN MUSEUM LIBRARY– There will now be ONE SHOWING of two episodes every Friday evening, at 6pm. Come see the Greek television show, which will have English subtitles.

GARDENING MINISTRY - The next Gardening Ministry session will be held on July 30 at 5:30pm.

LAST CHANCE FOR THE SOUVENIR BOOK – July 31 is the ad submission deadline for the ad book! There is still the opportunity to have your ad in the Souvenir Book, so send in and pay for your ad promptly. Take an envelope from the Narthex to share with a potential new advertiser. All ads must be received by July 31!

PROSPHORA – We invite you to be a provider of prosphora to be used for The Divine Liturgy. We use 5 loaves on average for each Sunday Divine Liturgy. We appreciate your help with this special offering. Please click here to learn how to bake this beautiful offering.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY - The Families in Transition (FIT) Soup Kitchen serve hundreds of families and individuals in the community who need help. The Assumption Parish has requested to help on the 4th Sunday of every month. Anyone who is 16 or order can volunteer to help! If you are passionate about making a difference in your community, there is no better time than right now to join our volunteer team! Each household is invited to pick up a complimentary copy of The Divine Liturgy Explained in the community center during coffee hour.

Bread has been the emblem of God’s providence for us, throughout humanity’s history. Both physical (bread as food) and spiritual - the επιούσιον (epiousion) or “supersubstantial” bread of the Lord’s prayer, the bread of Holy Communion.

In the Orthodox Christian church, the pinnacle of our worship is union with Christ, both spiritually but also physically, by consuming the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Since the Last Supper, before every Divine Liturgy, one or more of the faithful prepare and bring bread to church to be used as the Body of Christ in the Eucharist. The Orthodox church is liturgical. For those of us who bake prosphoro, the liturgy begins as we prepare to bake!

Prosphoro is an offering to God, made from His material gifts to us, and prepared lovingly and prayerfully.
