a note from the 2025-26 ptsa president

As we near the end of the 2024-25 school year, it's my pleasure to thank our outgoing PTSA president, Bonnie Myshrall (pictured below). We all deeply appreciate Bonnie's many hours of work on behalf of our Langley community and her determination to leave us stronger and better than ever. From rethinking communications, to restructuring the board, to developing a new fundraising platform and everything in between, Bonnie was constantly thinking of ways to make us more effective. Always a problem solver, Bonnie found creative ways to work through challenges while bringing together the right mix of Langley staff, student and parent volunteers with their limitless capabilities.

"Bonnie, I'm so grateful that you will continue on as our VP of Fundraising and Membership for your final year at Langley. From a personal standpoint, I'm glad you're not going very far as I'm sure I'll continue to have lots of questions. Get ready to walk MANY laps around Langley Oaks with me!"

staff spotlight

Russell Finelsen is making his mark at Langley as a World History I teacher. After studying government and economics at the University of Virginia, Finelsen decided to pursue a career in teaching, driven by a personal experience from his childhood. Before he decided to teach at Langley, he gained experience by teaching at Sandburg Middle School in Fairfax County Public Schools.

His love for teaching began early in his childhood when a teacher inspired him to begin his journey into teaching. “I wanted to go into teaching specifically because when I was a kid, I had a really bad speech disability, and one of my teachers noticed it and went out of her way to give me [the] help I needed, and that really made an impact,” Finelsen said.

When coming to Langley, he decided to teach history for numerous reasons. He thought

that history provided his students with more life skills compared to other classes.

“I decided to go into history because I thought history was a really good way to improve basic skills like reading and writing and compare what their learning about ancient history to today and what they are experiencing around the world,” Finelsen said.

Students love his class for a variety of reasons. Besides always saying good morning to his students, Finelsen has his teaching style narrowed down to a tee in order to support his students as best as possible. He encourages his students to come to their own conclusions rather than relying on him. “A key thing for me in terms of teaching is keeping lectures really short, obviously students can copy off a board and they can listen to a teacher teach but I want them to do their own learning and investigation,” Finelsen said.

Outside of school Finelsen loves to do numerous activities and has worked several side

jobs, including refereeing youth basketball for the past seven years. “I play a lot of disc golf and my goal in my life is to someday play disc golf in all the 50 states, I have 5 down including DC, and I enjoy reading and playing trivia with my friends every week,” Finelsen said.

One notable thing about Finelson is his love for his students, which we viewed when we

visited his classroom to take photos of him teaching. All his students were engaged and

completed numerous different activities in order to solidify their understanding of a new historic concept. “[My favorite part of teaching has] got to be the students and encouraging them to get out of their comfort zone. For instance, maybe they’re not used to working with other people. [I enjoy] getting them to do more and getting them to think critically when they might just want to think at the basic level,” Finelsen said.

CHANGES COMING IN 2025-26 TO ATHLETIC PHYSICALS AND ATHLETIC REGISTRATION
IMPORTANT UPDATE REGARDING SPORTS PHYSICALS
Legislation introduced in the Virginia General Assembly and recently signed into law will result in two significant changes to the athletic pre-participation examination (physical) requirements for FCPS student-athletes:
  • Beginning Jul 1, 2025, athletic physicals will be considered valid for a period of 14 months from the date the form is signed by the medical provider completing the exam. This is the date on page 3 of the VHSL Athletic Participation/Parent Consent/Physical Examination Form (the Jan 2021 form).

RSCHOOL REGISTRATION CHANGE
The current athletic registration platform (rSchools i.e. langleyathletics.org ) will be moving. All of the new sites are in the process of being created. Some important information for you while the process is finalized:
  • registration sites will NOT open on May 1 this year due to the creation of the new sites.
  • there will be a new site address, families will have to create new accounts and the registrations from the current registration system will not carry over at this time.
  • details will be sent out once everything is up and running to include instructions.
Please DO NOT register your athletes for the 25-26 season with your old langleyathletics accounts. New information will be sent out as soon as the site is live.
The latest information can be found here.
