Today one of our reporters called a public official -- a politician's spokesperson, paid for with your tax bucks.  And the spokesperson, as he has done twice in the past, refused to address an issue on the record with our reporter.

While in the past, this public official has just refused to comment, today he got more aggressive, sniping first to our reporter and then to me, "I only speak with legitimate news organizations."

This was right before he started to mansplain journalism to me, saying that he had been a reporter for 30 years. Wonderful!  I love having someone whose job it is to speak with the media refuse to do so, then explain to me a profession they were apparently unable to do!  MY FAVORITE!

And then he accused the Appeal of being "the arm of...something." I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS.  But I can tell you this -- the hand that mysterious arm's attached to better hand over its wallet, because no one here is getting paid like we're the arm of anything good!

For my part, I want the Appeal's stories to have as much good, reliable information as possible.  And as someone who worked in PR for far less than 30 years, I believe that people who refuse to comment do whomever they work for a grave disservice, and when their salary's being paid by all of us, well, I think we all lose.
