An accomplished singer, song-catcher, actress, composer and teacher, Mariana's work blends folk song and physical theater, exploring archaic midsummer night invocations, wedding songs and emigrant chants from remote villages in rural Ukraine.

Celebrating its 15th Anniversary, The World Harmony Chorus, directed by Daniel Steinberg and Betsy Blakeslee, is an ensemble of singers of all ages and abilities who enjoy singing songs from a variety of cultures. The World Harmony Chorus has invited ZELE: The Kitka Community Chorus, directed by Janet Kutulas, to join them in their celebration. ZELE will present a program of harmonies from Eastern Europe and Georgia in their uniquely joyful and spirited style!

KITKA & SVETLANA SPAJIC TO THE SINGERS OF TALES On tour in Serbia June 17-30, 2013 with performances in Belgrade, Subotica, Novi Sad, Gornji Milanovac, Sirogojno, Negotin, and Zajecar
In January 2012, Kitka embarked on collaborative project with Serbian traditional singer and performance artist Svetlana Spajic. The creative chemistry between Kitka and Svetlana was nothing short of magical and we sold out three premiere performances of To The Singers of Tales at CounterPULSE in San Francisco. In 2013 we were thrilled to receive invitations to perform this work at a series of folk music festivals throughout Serbia. We'll also be performing with Svetlana on Serbian National Television and meeting with a variety of traditional singers, as well as the award-winning composer Boris Kovac who has expressed interest in composing a new work especially for Kitka's voices!

An Endangered Song Preservation Expedition
with Kitka, Kutay Derin Kugay (USA); Refika Kadioglu, G�ler Topaloglu, and Dalepe Nena (Turkey); Tamar Buadze, Nugzar Arveladze and Lili Abdulishi (Georgia)

From Serbia, Kitka will venture to the village of Arhavi in Northeastern Turkey to gather lullabies from traditional Laz singers. The Laz are an ethnic group native to the Black Sea coastal regions of Turkey and Georgia, and Laz lullaby melodies are among the most beautiful to be found in the world. The Laz people have colorful folklore and their unique language, belonging to the South Caucasian family of languages, is considered one of the world's endangered tongues.

Since lullabies are the gateway to language and culture in the earliest stages of life, we feel that the preservation of Laz lullabies can play a vital role in the survival of the Laz mother-tongue.
