“Fleet Week” kicks off 12th anniversary of Blessing of the Fleet June 25-28

Area residents, visitors and their families are invited to participate in the official launch of summer at the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society’s Blessing of the Fleet “Fleet Week,” held June 25-28.

This event honors local maritime history with three days of activities, including the blessing boat parade, a free event open to all watercraft. Last year’s parade eclipsed 150 vessels on the water and hundreds of spectators lined the docks and the bay’s five public and private marinas.

Boats will cruise the harbor at 6 pm parading past the flagship, Canim, to receive their blessing for a safe boating season from Fr. James Bearss. All watercraft are welcome to participate, including canoes, paddle boards, sailboats and power boats. This year, the society’s honorary commodore for the event is Dick Babcock, a long-time sailor and resident of Harbor Springs as well as a regular volunteer for the society. Babcock will toss a memorial wreath into the harbor at the start of the parade in honor of those who have lost their lives on the water. Boat parade participants are strongly encouraged to register their vessel with the society to receive important radio channel and course information.

No boat, no worries. Board the Little Traverse Bay Ferry Company’s 65’ Harbor Princess for top deck viewing and participation in the parade. For those who prefer to stay on land, you will not be disappointed if you join the water song ceremony with the Odawa Woodland Singers at the Harbor Springs city pier. These Anishnaabe kwe will lead the opening ceremony at 5:30 pm before the Odawa jiimaan (canoe) pushes off the dock to lead the procession of boats. The parade will be narrated on marine channel 73 and broadcast over FM channel 88.9, amongst the background entertainment of the Harbor Springs Community Band.

While the boat parade is the centerpiece of “Fleet Week,” a festival of activities is taking place from June 26-28:

  • June 26 – History on the Harbor ... Journey on a Jiimaan - 11:00 am to 3:00 pm in Josephine Ford Park, Harbor Springs
  • June 26 – History of the Harbor ... Narrated Sunset Cruise - Board the charming Harbor Princess for a narrated sunset cruise on Little Traverse Bay with Historical Society Curator Beth Wemigwase. Reservations are $75 each. Depart either from Petoskey’s Bay Front Park at 7:30 pm or Josephine Ford Park, Harbor Springs at 8:15 pm.
  • June 28 – History at the Museum ... NM Sloop Exhibit & Presentation. $25 reservations include wine and light snacks. 4:30 pm Exhibit Opening, 5:30 pm Presentation.
  • June 27 – View the Boat Parade aboard the Harbor Princess. Take part in the Blessing of the Fleet boat parade from the deck of the 65' Harbor Princess. $150 reservations for this casual cruise include a full-service bar and light appetizers. Depart either from Petoskey’s Bay Front Park at 4:15 pm or Josephine Ford Park, Harbor Springs at 5:00 pm.
  • June 27 – Blessing of the Fleet Boat Parade on the Harbor. Register your watercraft to take part in the annual boat parade on the harbor. Vessels of all shapes and sizes are welcome and will be blessed for a safe and fun boating season as they parade by the flagship, Canim.

Apply now for Leadership Little Traverse Class of 2025; Deadline is July 15th

The application window has opened for the next class of Leadership Little Traverse. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Monday, July 15th. Applications are available online

Leadership Little Traverse is a community leadership program hosted by the Petoskey Regional and Harbor Springs Area Chambers of Commerce. The class of 2025 will be the 24th class to go through the program. Sessions begin in September of 2024 and will be held monthly through May 2025. Each session is a full day in length and introduces class members to different facets of the community while helping them hone personal leadership skills.

This is an incredible opportunity to:

  1. Learn about the state of our community, its systems, and current issues.
  2. Develop your civic leadership skills and capacity to make an impact.
  3. Find your path and commit to doing 'community better' in the Little Traverse Bay Region.

In addition to the classroom experiences, the participants will undertake a class-wide community service project and a personal leadership project. Each participant will develop a mentor relationship with a community leader.

The leadership program cost is $900 per person. A limited number of scholarships will be available for those who need financial assistance. Class size is limited, and members of the class are selected based on the strength of their application.

We offer both an online application, as well as a printed version. You can learn more about the program and access the applications here. The application will take time and thought to complete properly. More applications will be received than the 16 available slots, so applicants are encouraged to spend time and put some good thought into their answers.

If you have any questions contact Bonnie Kulp at 231-526-7999 or director@harborspringschamber.com.

Check out the updated booth map and openings for record largest Art Show at Nub's Nob on July 10

A record number of artists have registered for the July 10th Art Show at Nub’s Nob Resort, but there are still about 10 booth spaces available in this year’s expanded show. The Art Show is organized by the Harbor Springs Area Chamber and the Northern Michigan Women's Club.

Here is the updated Booth Map and Pricing, and here is the Artist Contract/Application for artists who would like to participate.

The chamber and the Women’s Club teamed up to restart the Art Show in 2023, after a three-year pandemic hiatus. Last year’s show was a major success, attracting 84 artists and hundreds of art lovers. More than 100 artists are expected this year. The organizers have announced that Birchwood Farms Golf & Country Club has come aboard as the Premier Sponsor for the event.

“It’s a great match to have Birchwood Farms, one of the premier country clubs in the region, joining us to sponsor one of the premier art shows in Northern Michigan,” said Chamber Executive Director Bonnie Kulp.

The Art show runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 10th. Admission is a suggested donation of $5. Proceeds from the Art Show benefit the Harbor Springs Chamber and the many charitable organizations supported by the Northern Michigan Women's Club. Anyone with questions may contact Bonnie at the chamber, 231-526-7999, or email director@harborspringschamber.com.

Brown Photography introduces Ripples Cards

D R Brown Photography is thrilled to introduce Ripples Cards, a delightful creation by our Creative Director, Debbie Brown. Debbie shares her excitement: “I am truly delighted to share this news with you. Following my retirement from Engineering management at General Motors about a year and a half ago, I've been immersed in crafting these charming greeting cards. Our primary aim is to bring joy to people's faces as they open these heartfelt notes. Each card features a background photograph of the picturesque Harbor Springs, skillfully captured by my husband Doug (D R Brown Photography). But here's the twist - nestled within each card is a whimsical woodland creature, peeking out in various endearing poses. While they may not be entirely realistic, these anime-inspired characters are undeniably cheerful and adorable.

Our cards are meticulously designed and printed locally on 100% recycled paper, with compostable clear sleeves for added eco-friendliness. Inspired by the remarkable work of the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society, a portion of our proceeds will be dedicated to supporting this noble cause.

Our online store showcasing the complete collection is now live, and we would be honored if you took a moment to explore. For those who prefer a hands-on experience, Sally at the Pet Pantry in Harbor Springs has the full range available, while Renee Guthrie from Lake Street Design in Petoskey offers a curated selection, as do Yummies and the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society. As time goes on, we plan to expand our presence to more locations for your browsing (and hopefully purchasing.) pleasure.

Great Start Collaborative receives preschool grant funding from community foundations

The Great Start Collaborative of Charlevoix, Emmet and Northern Antrim Counties recently received preschool funding that will support families and children in Northern Michigan. The Charlevoix County Community Foundation and the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation both provided funding to the Great Start Preschool Scholarship Program.

“Having access to high-quality preschool is a key factor impacting a child’s school readiness,” said Savanah Cool, Great Start Collaborative director. “While there are income-based programs in our communities - Great Start Readiness Program and Head Start, specifically - there is not enough capacity in those programs to serve every child who would qualify. These scholarships remove financial barriers for families to be able to enroll their children in available tuition based preschool programs.”

The Charlevoix County Community Foundation provided $10,000 through the Community Priorities 2024 grant cycle. The Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation provided $9,300 from its Boeckman Family Fund ($500), Ted and Brenda Frey Donor Advised Fund ($800), .Circuit Controls Corp. Charitable Fund ($1,000), and Birchwood Outreach Fund ($7,000). Cool said these funds will be available to support families beginning in fall 2024. Full press release.

Note: Raven Hill already has a small labyrinth in front of the Main Museum building. It is a favorite of the 5-year-old crowd, who often insist on walking all their “big people” through the winding pathways of the labyrinth and doing it one person at a time!

Wednesday was Data Day at the market.

Saturday is Kids Day at the Farmers Market

By Hannah Bianchi, Harbor Springs Farmers Market Master

This is an eventful week at the Farmers Market. Wednesday, June 19th, was our first Data Day of the season, and Saturday, June 22, is our first Kids Day of the season.

On Wednesday, the border of the market was roped off and we had volunteers at the four designated entrances counting customers. We also had an optional survey at the front of the market. These data collection days are very helpful to our organization, as they help us gather information on our market that is important for future funding opportunities.

On Saturday, we have lots of fun activities planned for Kids Day. Weather permitting, Northern Michigan Bounce House will be set up at the end of the street. There will be four scavenger hunts. Ever

y participant will receive a $2 token to spend at the market, plus the chance to win a $20 gift certificate to Rocking Horse Toy Company. Kids can earn a second $2 token by trying all six items in the taste test.

We love each year how many new foods are tried and liked through the taste test. There will also be umbrella painting, live music, face painting, prizes, coloring pages and more. Kids Days have become the highlight of the summer, and we can’t wait to share our market with the whole family!

This Saturday will also be the first official market of Summer, which means peak produce season is coming our way. Right now, strawberries are in full swing, so be sure to pick up a quart to two, or even a flat of juicy deliciousness from Guntzviller’s or Farmer White’s.

KK with Berg Farms has the very first carrots and beets of the season, but you must come early because they don’t last long. Black Barn Farm will have fresh broccoli along with their famous garlic scape pesto, and Northern Growin’ has a

wonderful selection of fresh herbs along with greens, radishes and more.

Mom and youngster with his free tomato plant "sprout."

Sugar Moon performed Wednesday.

A few changes for this year: Mack City Chips is in attendance on Wednesdays only, so be sure to grab a bag of homemade potato or tortilla chips for the week, and this year Spoonful of Granola is here Saturdays only. New vendor Maniacal Mead attends on Saturdays, and Duerksen Turkey Farm attends both days. Be sure to check our website for a full list of vendors, their products, and what days they attend the market.

Our Young Entrepreneurs on Wednesday were the Ocko siblings with fresh eggs and Emma Condon with bracelets. On Saturday, our Young Entrepreneurs will be Ellery Polleys with nature-themed art products and Zoe Kaufman with decorated tumblers and notebooks.

The Guest of the Market on Saturday will be Grand Traverse Sauce company, so stock up on hot sauces for their one scheduled day this season. Harbor Springs Historical Society will also be attending as well as the Harbor Springs Garden Club.

Music at the Market this Wednesday was first-timer Sugar Moon. Then on Saturday, Rivertown Jazz makes their season debut.

> The Harbor Springs Farmers Market is located right downtown on Main Street Saturdays, May 25-October 12, and Wednesdays, May 29-August 28, from 9am to 1pm. Meet you at the Market!
