REALTORS® are committed to following a Code of Ethics, which includes professional responsibility to protect the rights of all individuals and protected classes.
It's important to remember that the same rules apply to what you post on your business pages and personal pages where you may represent other organizations. Always think about how your posts could be perceived, even if it's not how you intended them to be.
Article 10 of the NAR Code of Ethics leaves no room for ambiguity-it strictly forbids discrimination in professional services and employment practices, including discriminatory speech and conduct. Standard of Practice 10-5 states, "REALTORS® must not use harassing speech, hate speech, epithets, or slurs based on sexual orientation, race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, or gender identity." This is a serious ethical violation that we must all be vigilant to avoid.
As a licensed real estate professional, the REALTOR® Code of Ethics applies to your business-related communications. The difference between your face-to-face and electronic conversations is that anything you type or video creates a record. Remember, social media posts can reach broad audiences quickly and affect your image for a long time.
