UPDATE
Northern Virginia, including the City of Alexandria, to enter Phase 2 of Forward Virginia on Friday, June 12

Governor Northam announced this afternoon that Northern Virginia, to include the City of Alexandria, can move into Phase 2 of the "Forward Virginia" plan that continues to gradually ease public health restrictions while containing the spread of COVID-19 this Friday, June 12th. Northern Virginia and the City of Richmond will join the rest of the Commonwealth in Phase 2. Previous estimates noted that Phase 2 is expected 2-4 weeks- the actual length of the second phase will be based on data, including the health metrics that are tracked and reported by the Virginia Department of Health.

Under Phase 2, the Commonwealth will maintain a Safer At Home strategy, where Virginians and businesses are encouraged to continue social distancing, teleworking and requiring individuals to wear face covering in indoor public settings. The number of individuals permitted in a social gathering will increase from 10 to 50 people.

The AEDP and City of Alexandria will reconvene groups of businesses by industry to review specific guidance for Phase 2 and discuss Alexandria-specific policies and initiatives designed to support the safe reopening and rescaling of businesses (see below for details). Specifically:
  • Restaurant and beverage establishments may offer indoor dining at 50 percent occupancy
  • Fitness centers may open indoor areas at 30 percent occupancy,
  • Certain recreation and entertainment venues without shared equipment may open with restrictions, while
  • The current guidelines for non-essential retail and personal grooming services will largely remain the same in Phase Two.
