Hillview School News
Dear Hillview Families,

Our adventures in Hybrid learning continue with rising COVID cases and new state stay-at-home regulations, which have yet to be activated for San Mateo County. As you have seen from Superintendent Burmeister’s recent updates, the Board of Education met Thursday, December 3, to discuss possible triggers for returning to Distance Learning. Unanimously, the Board opted to stay the course of our Hybrid program, noting the effectiveness of our protocols at all MPCSD schools and the low rate of positivity in schools in general. The Board did commit to more frequent meetings while the county is in the purple tier. And of course, the state guidelines for school closure (5% of students and staff testing positive within a 2-week time frame, or 25% of the schools in the district needing to close) are still in effect.

Monday we welcome back our BLUE students for the first time since November 20. As a reminder, if you did travel over Thanksgiving, the recommended 14-day quarantine will continue into and through this week, depending on when you returned from your trip. We thank all those GOLD families who acted responsibly in observing the quarantine this past week. Hillview stands ready to provide an Independent Study Plan for the duration of a student’s quarantine. By observing CSD-recommended quarantine, we keep our schools safe and ensure that in-person learning can continue.

In other news, this coming week we will be rotating students out to designated areas on our courts and field during lunch. Because PE classes are in person and in progress during all three lunches, we will be asking our lunchtime students to follow these expectations here. Also, we hosted about 80 families at our PTO Conversation Chat this past Wednesday. If you did not attend and would like to view the informative presentation by Jeffrey Gielow, “The Disarming Technique: How to Get Along and Keep Your Connections Strong with Your Middle Schooler,” you can find the recording here (passcode=SjZAEE9!). Finally, please mark your calendars for Hillview’s final Coffee Talk of 2020 focused on Student Well Being on Wednesday, December 16, 9:30 - 10:30. This talk will feature Hillview Counselors Kellie Raczkowski, Christina Johnson, and Robyn Watts, as well as School Psychologist Nilou Tarani.

All the best,

Willy

Each week a staff member will be randomly selected to share a little bit more about themselves so the Hillview Community can get to know them better.

Kara Connelly
Kara teaches 8th grade science and has been at Hillview for 3 years. When not teaching Kara spends her time learning, exercising, being in nature, traveling, food/nutrition, planning/organizing, learning languages, watching and performing theatre, studying astronomy, gardening.

Favorite Quote: "The more you know, the more you realize how much you don't know. The less you know, the more you think you know" - David T. Freeman

Favorite Movie: The Lion King and Finding Nemo

Favorite Theater Production: My favorite theatre production is Little Shop of Horrors and my favorite theatre production that I was a cast member in was Spamalot

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: Black sesame froyo or kulfi (almond/pistachio/cardamom)
Favorite Subjects as a Middle School Student: Science (chemistry)

Words of Wisdom for Hillview students: "Never stop learning because life never stops teaching", "If not now, when?", and "It's okay to fall apart sometimes. Tacos fall apart, we still love them"

What you probably didn’t know about me: My last year of college I considered becoming an art/play therapist instead of a teacher.

One more thing: I like teaching students the scientific method and how even scientific "failures" are celebrated because scientists learn from mistakes and that learning is messy.

School Board Update December 3

The School Board held a special meeting on December 3 to discuss possible triggers that would prompt the Board to return all students to distance learning. Over 300 members of the public attended and there was robust public comment during the meeting.

On Friday, December 4 Superintendent Burmeister emailed all parents and staff a detailed summary of the meeting's purpose and the Board's discussion and decisions. If you did not have a chance to read that letter, you may view it here. The next regularly scheduled Board meeting is December 17 at 5:00 pm.

Update - Hillview Route 83 Continues Service

As we initially reported in our Reopening Plan, SamTrans has had to make some adjustments to their usual bus routes that serve MPCSD schools. Recently, SamTrans informed the county that "given the operating constraints posed by the pandemic, SamTrans will not be able to maintain all of the routes traditionally serving schools for the remainder of the school year." For MPCSD, this means that routes 80, 82, 84, and 88 will not run this year. Route 83 that serves Hillview will continue to operate. Our Reopening Plan has been updated to reflect this change.

Testing Every Weekday Starting Tomorrow
Monday, December 7 - Friday,December 11, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, in parking lot, 201 Ravenswood Avenue, Menlo Park

We are happy to report that beginning tomorrow, Curative will have a testing kiosk open all week which will greatly increase capacity to serve our families. To make an appointment, go to the Curative website here, click "Get Tested Now" and enter Menlo Park in the search bar.

MPCSD recommends that students attending in person be tested every two weeks. This kiosk is open to the community. Curative will still operate on Friday, December 11 at Hillview, but that will be the final Hillview testing date. Details on registering for this date will be emailed to Hybrid families this week.
District English Learner Advisory Committee

DELAC is a committee for the parents of students who are learning English. At our December meeting, we will be learning about the upcoming English Language Proficiency Assessment of CA (ELPAC). The meeting will take place from 4:30 - 6:00 pm, via Zoom here.

MPAEF
#GivingTuesday - together, we did it!
Thanks to generous donations from district families and community members - we raised $11,547 on #GivingTuesday!

Due to the tremendous outpouring of support and with the $2,000 matching donation we unlocked from two generous district families by reaching our one-day goal, we are now able to purchase grocery gift cards for 60 MPCSD families in need during the upcoming holiday season.

MPAEF and MPCSD thank you for your support!
