GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY 2022
|
|
Why is it called Global Youth Service Day when it's celebrated for 3 days? Good question! While the very first Global Youth Service Day (then called "A Day in the Life of Youth Service") was a single day on Thursday, October 13, 1988, after the event became known as National Youth Service Day starting in 1990, we expanded to 3 days: Friday for our school-based partners, Saturday for our community-based partners, and Sunday for our faith-based partners. It's stayed this way for 30+ years!

|
GYSD is the largest youth service and civic action event in the world and the only one that celebrates and asks all young people ages 5-25 to help our communities and democracy thrive by working together for the common good.
There are many GYSD Partner Days of Service that take place in April. You can choose to participate in one (or more) of our GYSD Partner Days of Service and be a part of multiple national or global events with a single activity.

Everyday Young Hero: Louis Geer
|
Growing up around the world as the child of a military parent, Louis Geer (17 | San Antonio, Texas) saw service in action every day. When his family settled in San Antonio where Louis attends high school, he was struck by how difficult the lives are of many of his neighbors. As the poorest metro area in America, San Antonio has many people just struggling to get by. Louis was deeply affected by how much suffering there is on the home front and has dedicated much of his time and effort to making things better on a local level.
A lover of learning, Lucas noticed that every year many of his fellow students would stock up on academic prep books and required class books, then throw them away once the school year ended. At the same time, millions of students across the country were unable to afford or access these same books. There were also few places where books could be donated and then redistributed to those most in need. As a solution, in early 2020 Louis founded the San Antonio Book Pool, a non-profit designed to help less-privileged students gain easier access to books.
With over a dozen youth and adult volunteers from across San Antonio, Book Pool works to get books in hands of students through book drives, direct book donations, and fundraising efforts to buy new books. In the last two years, Louis and his team—with the support of community partners including Family Service, Boys and Girls Club of San Antonio and San Antonio Youth— have collected and donated over 4,100 books! To ensure all youth are able to benefit from Book Pool’s work, Louis is pushing for the collection of Spanish-language books and collaborating with the partner organizations to identify specific book needs and best support youth. As Book Pool grows, Louis continues to think of ways he and his organization can help, incorporating summer reading programs, tutoring sessions, and read-a-thons!

Before youth organize a service activity, it's important to help them investigate a community need and choose an activity. This includes:
- Choose a cause/issue/community need.
- Learn more about the issue.
- Identify students' personal interests, passions, and assets.
- Map community resources and assets.
- Choose an action strategy.
- Put it all together in a service project.
To help youth investigate, use:

"Sunday Bloody Sunday" - U2
|
"I can't believe the news today
Oh, I can't close my eyes and make it go away
How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long? How long?
'Cause tonight
We can be as one ...
And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won?
The trenches dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart ...
'Cause tonight we can be as one, tonight
Tonight, tonight (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Tonight, tonight (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Alright, let's go!"
