CENTURY ASKS FOR 6 YEAR EXTENSION:

PLANNING COMMISSION

Wednesday May 13

EG developer Century will ask the Planning Commission for a 6 year extension of the project deadline at the Commission meeting: 9:00am Wednesday 5/13/2026. Evidently developers can ask for shorter, 2-year extensions but Century is going for the maximum.


Importantly, the Notice of Hearing says:

"IF YOU CHALLENGE THIS MATTER IN COURT, YOU MAY BE LIMITED TO RAISING ONLY THOSE ISSUES YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE RAISED AT THE PUBLIC HEARING DESCRIBED IN THIS PUBLIC NOTICE OR IN WRITTEN CORRESPONDENCE DELIVERED TO THE PLANNING COMMISSION AT OR BEFORE THE PUBLIC HEARING." [all-caps and bold theirs]


NOW is the time to submit comments via email to pchearingcomments@countyofmonterey.gov by 5:00 p.m. the Tuesday 5/12. The comments will be given to Planning Commission members.

Whatever your opinion, you are encouraged to let the Planning Commission know, via email and/or in person. Your reporter suggests that when you send comments, ask for a reply acknowledging the email has been received. You could also cc: our Sup. Wendy Root Askew (address below)

County update on EG

Housing and Community Development, HCD, are the county staffers in charge of East Garrison. They are scheduled to give an update at the CSD meeting on 5/13. CSD meetings are held at 6:00 in the fire station. It's the best time to get your questions answered and to hear directly from those in authority. Hope to see you there!

Phase 4 Review

Parking is an issue but safety is an even greater concern. Pick a house in purple or blue and imagine 2 delivery vans stopped nearby, then there's an emergency needing a fire truck or ambulance.

Recap:

  • Red = Town Center with 66 apartments above, 102 off-street parking spaces
  • Where will renters park if they don't get that lot?
  • Century's retail study says the Town Center will only work if we get customers from outside EG.
  • Purple = row houses, one-way lanes, one entrance, one exit onto Ord
  • Blue = single family homes on lots smaller than Phase 3. Bragg Way is narrow where it meets Ord, dead-ends with no way to turn; other streets are lanes
  • In the rest of EG there's one car on the street for every 2 houses.
  • 400 new neighbors plus Town Center customers, where are they going to park?

EG Library is a GO!

Construction bidding for the EG Library was approved by the Board of Supervisors on 4/14/2026! Librarian Hillary Theyer reports a groundbreaking will be scheduled soon.

To contribute to the Opening Day Fund go to EGLibraryFund. The sooner we give, the better they will be able to budget.

To join other Friends so we're ready with help when they need us, email friendsofeglibrary@gmail.com. So far we're not an official Friends (capital F) group, but a group of (lowercase f) friends. We could use some leadership, it's a great cause!

Historic District Clean-up Continues


We've received a brief update on the Historic Arts District, from the Successor Agency:

  • West Coast Arborists are in charge of mowing around the Historic District, to reduce fire fuel, and keep the tall grasses down.


  • DKI staff continue to monitor and provide maintenance services. Recently they entered each building to monitor for damage, trespass, and signs of rodents and moisture.
