Over the course of just a week or two, our daily lives have certainly changed. The COVID-19 pandemic is full of uncertainties . . . yet one thing that remains true is the need to take care of ourselves so that we can care for our families.
We know that it can be difficult to find time to recharge, and the advice to fit in some self-care may even feel overwhelming, like just one more thing on your list. This week we have gathered six quick tips, each taking under one minute to complete so that you can easily implement some self-care in even the busiest of days. Some of these tips can also be done as a family!
- As you are drinking your coffee, tea, or water in the morning, pause before taking the first sip. Smell the aroma, feel the heat of the mug or the cold of the glass on your hand, and then take three intentional breaths. Once your three breaths are done, enjoy!
- Smile and hold it for 10 seconds. Include the family by having a smile contest. Stand or sit in a circle and smile at each other and see who can do it the longest without laughing.
- If you're working from home, each time you sit down or stand up at your computer, take a brief pause. Close your eyes and take a moment to notice sensations around you. Your feet on the floor, your body in the chair. Take two intentional breaths and then continue with your day.
- As you head to bed, take a moment to be thankful by taking three deep breaths followed by identifying one thing that happened during the day that you are thankful for--no matter how big or small.
- Take a moment to stretch out: raise your arms straight up above your head, and then bring them out to your sides. Gently roll your head from the left to the right. Shrug your shoulders, and then roll them to the front and back a few times.
- Take a tech time-out by setting a timer for 30-60 seconds. Turn off/silence all technology. Take a look outside and find three things that you find beauty in. (Note: These items don’t necessarily need to fit in a typical definition of beauty. For example, notice the peacefulness of the streets if there are no cars or people around.)
