Greetings!
This week begins Ramadan, the holiest month of the Islamic calendar. From March 22nd through April 22nd, Muslims from around the world, including many SLP students and families, will observe and celebrate. This is a time of personal and spiritual-reflection, a time for community connection and growth. Thanks to all for supporting our diverse community of learners.

RAMADAN, OBSERVED BY OUR MUSLIM FAMILIES
STARTS ON THE EVENING OF March 22nd.
It lasts 30 days and ends at sundown on April 22nd. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is a month of fasting, prayer, giving and self-evaluation observed by Muslims. The month lasts 29-30 days depending on the sightings of the crescent moon. More information and plans for spaces for our students who wish to pray are included herein. We need to keep in mind how this might impact our students’ learning and participation in school activities.
Plans/Adaptations to Prayer Room scheduling:
- Prayer is at 1:30 starting on March 22nd.
- Students must return to class by 1:46.
- The window for prayer will change to 1:30-1:46, due to DST, until the end of the school year.
- We are utilizing the prayer room in B1, and will have an auxiliary space in B134 for students to sit whilst fasting during Ramadan.

Students who elect to participate in Dhuhr (the 2nd daily prayer held at the aforementioned time), will potentially miss the beginning of 6th period: Parents/students must be aware that extra communication and personal responsibility will be needed to ensure academic goals can remain rigorous, and learners do not fall behind scholastically. Students utilizing the prayer room are reminded to review the prayer space agreement they and their parents signed as we enter the final stretch of the spring 2023 school term. We will be rigorous with the tenants of the agreement, and missing any class time beyond that stated in the agreement, will result in calls home, per the language in the form. This is to ensure those electing to observe religious liberties during school do not adversely impact their own education.
Helpful reminders for the month of Ramadan:
- Physical Education: Students who are fasting may experience low blood sugar or weakness that make physical activity dangerous. It is recommended to modify exercise for these students, or excuse them from Physical Education classes. It is important to have conversations with your Muslim students observing Ramadan, and be prepared with alternative activities for students who may need them.
- Lunch: To accommodate students who choose to fast during Ramadan, students will have the option to be in B134 during their assigned lunch.
- Music: Some Muslim students may believe that participating in music is not permissible based on their understanding of Islam. If students choose to refrain from music during the four weeks of Ramadan, teachers may offer special projects for students to continue in class, or give students the option of working in another class.
- Lack of sleep: Many students may stay up late during Ramadan because breaking the fast each night can be around 8:30 PM or later. This is especially true during the last ten days of Ramadan, when prayer is considered to have greatly increased significance.

STUDENT PARKING/PERMIT UPDATE | |

We will no longer be selling student parking permits. They have been sold out. Students driving to school must have your parking pass clearly displayed in your vehicle to park in the student parking lot and must park in student designated spots only or you may be towed. Small lot near door 1 and first row next to 33rd street is visitor and staff parking only. Street parking is available two blocks away from the school if you do not have a school parking permit or if there are no spots due to the lack of spots because of the amount of snow we have.
We have been ticketing and will be starting to tow vehicles parked illegally in the school parking lot.

HS VENDING MACHINE CHANGES | |

The School Nutrition Department has made some changes to the vending machines at the high school. Now families will need to create a 4-digit pin for their students to use the vending machines. The 4-digit pin cannot start with a 0. Students will still need to scan their student ID card with the 4-digit security pin.
You will need to create the 4-digit pin with your Wordware meal account. A family will be able to change their 4-digit pin if they feel that they need to do so. Click here on the link for step-by-step instructions.

Hands on Learning at St. Louis Park High School
St. Louis Park High School wants to help students learn better... that's why the school is committed to offering hands-on learning opportunities. Whether it's in business, engineering or any number of classes and after-school activities, kids at SLPHS are able to use their hands while learning important concepts.
When students are engaged in active learning, they're using both sides of their brains. Brain scan studies show more brain activity happening when students think about concepts they learned in a hands-on way. What's more--active learning leads to higher test scores and lower drop-out rates.

SLPHS Alumni Never Forgets his School
Kara Mueller, the Career and College Coordinator at St. Louis Park High School, treasures a thank-you letter she received from a grateful alum, Sam Bristlin. Sam, who's had an entrepreneurial spirit since way back in high school, has become a leader in the construction world… despite not having a college degree. Sam, who owns Bristlin Construction Services, decided to gamble on himself, rather than rack up even more student debt. Sam feels he learned more in high school business classes and DECA than he did during his time in college. To show his gratitude, Sam donated VISA gift cards and a generous check to support current students pursuing their dreams. In Sam’s letter, he urged Kara and everyone at SLPHS to keep encouraging students to go into the trades… he knows firsthand how much contractors need good people willing to learn on the job.

Model United Nations Delegation donation opportunity:
Social Studies is starting a Model United Nations Delegation through the YMCA. As they prepare for the conference at the end of March, they are looking for help to make this new club accessible to all students. To keep costs low at $100 per student, they are asking for monetary donations to help cover the remaining 75% of costs.

SAVE THE DATE: HONORING THE YOUTH POWWOW

The St. Louis Park community is invited to the Honoring the Youth Powwow taking place on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Recreation Outdoor Center (ROC) in St. Louis Park, 12-6 p.m. The grand entry will take place at 1 p.m. and the powwow will include dancing, drumming, honoring ancestors, and food and vendors.
The Honoring the Youth Powwow is presented by the St. Louis Park Public Schools' American Indian Parent Advisory Council and the High School's Youth Intertribal Council.

MUSEUM EXHIBIT: TALENT DEVELOPMENT SHOWCASE | |

St. Louis Park Public Schools invites families to the Museum Exhibit at all SLP elementary schools where K-2 students will showcase projects related to engineering, architecture, and science careers created in their Talent Development class.
What: Museum Exhibit (student projects)
Where: Exhibits will take place at all St. Louis Park Public School elementary schools (Aquila - Media Center, Park Spanish Immersion, Susan Lindgren, and Peter Hobart events will take place in Talent Development classrooms)
When: Thursday, March 23, 5- 7 p.m.
Why: Students have been inspired by the work of Norma Merrick Sklarek, a Black female architect who worked closely with Cesar Pelli. She was often not recognized for her collaboration on some of his projects that became well known.

Summer Learning Academy - Rising 1-8th Graders
The Summer Learning Academy is a free program that promotes student growth and exposes learners to social and emotional development and cultural awareness through the engagement of academics, enrichment and physical activities. Learners will also be exposed to on-site and off-site field trip/experiential learning to enhance the overall summer experience. Click on the link below to fill out an enrollment form.

St. Louis Park Community Education is excited to offer morning and afternoon fee-based camps as part of its Summer Learning & Play program. If a student registers for both an AM and PM camp, they can stay all day. There will be staff supervision from 12:00-1:00 PM for lunch and free-play time before afternoon classes begin. There is something for every kid including STEM camps, arts camps, sports camps, and more! These will take place at Peter Hobart Elementary. The camps are four days a week, Monday through Thursday. Transportation not provided.
