I hope this correspondence finds you well!  SLPHS is excited to kick-off Hispanic Heritage Month which began September 15th and continues through October 15th.  This year’s theme Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation aligns with our SLPHS focus on commUNITY.  This is a time to celebrate and honor their contributions to our society.  Our students and staff have planned a month of learning for our community to celebrate the rich culture of our Latino and Latinx brothers and sisters.

This Tuesday, September 20th, St. Louis Park high school will be hosting a kickoff event for a student-run voter registration drive. The event will take place in the high school auditorium at 11:30 AM and will be centered around the importance of student civic engagement. Speakers include Minnesota Lieutenant Governor (SLP alum) Peggy Flanagan and SLP City Councilmember Larry Kraft. The event will take place during 4th-5th hour. Any students that wish to attend will have to check in with their 4th hour teacher and scan a QR code upon entering the auditorium for attendance. We hope to see you all there!

GO PARK!!!

Please join our SLPHS Team on September 28th at 6 pm for our annual Virtual Family Night for grades 10-12.  This event will be recorded on zoom.

The expectation for students who have been granted PSEO release or Study Hall release is that they are outside of the building during their release time. Any student who wishes to be in the building during the school day must have an assigned class or study hall for the time they are in the building. Any student who has an opening in their schedule and who does not have a signed release form on file will have a study hall filled in to their schedule.

Students who wish to access the Learning Lab or Library Media Center for extra support should use the Student Support Time App beginning this Wednesday, to sign up. Students need to sign up in advance and report to their study hall for attendance purposes before using the app to go to another flex space.

SLPHS has provided and supported space for our students to pray daily. The basic expectations for the use of the prayer/spiritual practice room are as follows:

Students are expected to go to the prayer room and back to their assigned area immediately after they are finished. The space is open to students of any background/spiritual orientation.

For Muslim students, SLPSHS will utilize a common calendar, allowing students a 15 minute window between 1:20-1:35pm for Dhuhr prayer.

Students will have sufficient time to return home before 3rd prayer/Asr ends. If making Wudu in the bathroom before prayer, students are

expected to keep the area clean. Students are also expected to quietly leave/return to class so as to not disturb teaching; as well as figure out what they missed while out of class.

Students are not allowed to hang out in hallway spaces or bathrooms. All students should have a parent-signed prayer permission sheet on file with the school, which will allow for a prayer room pass on your student ID. If the student does not follow the expectations, the consequence will follow two strikes/warnings for misbehavior or missing class, and on the third strike, the

student will be refused access to the prayer room going forward.

Please have a conversation with your student about appropriate use of the prayer room space.

St. Louis Park High School is participating in a Direct Admissions pilot.  In early October 2022, seniors who are on track to graduate will receive personalized communication, co-signed by SLPHS and the Office of Higher Education, that lists all participating Minnesota colleges and universities they are proactively admitted to. Students must then complete a FREE admissions application for each of the colleges and universities they are interested in attending. All participating colleges and universities are waiving application fees as part of the Direct Admissions pilot.

This year's Senior Sunrise will happen on Thursday, September 22nd. Please gather in the back of the student parking lot at 6:20am. Students will have the chance to chat with their fellow seniors and watch the sunrise as we kick off the new school year. All Seniors are Welcomed!

Students not meeting attendance expectations will be assigned an after school detention. This includes students who receive the following in a single day: 3 or more Unexcused Tardies (U), two or more Partial Absences (AA), or 1 period of Absent Unexcused (A). Detention will take place Mondays thru Thursdays from 3:25pm to 4:00pm in the cafeteria. At the end of each school day, an attendance report will be run and all students who have been tardy or absent that day as noted above will be assigned detention after the following school day. An automated call will go home for students who will be receiving an after school detention the following day. Families will need to make appropriate transportation arrangements as transportation will not be provided by the school. This list will also be communicated each day to the athletic department (including coaches) and activities supervisors. Participating in a sport or activity is a privilege, and it is the expectation that students attend school and be on time to all classes in order to maintain good standing for athletics and activities.

Students are expected to be in class on time, every hour, every school day.  School is in session from 8:25 am to 3:15 pm.  Students with a first period class will be expected to report on time by the 8:25 am bell.  Any student that reports to school after 8:25 am will be marked tardy. Any student that reports to school after 8:30 am will need to report to the main office (enter Door 1) for a pass to class.  

*Students that have a study hall release/open hour or PSEO will need to check-in at the main office (enter Door 1) and have their permanent pass available before reporting to their assigned space.

For the 2022-2023 school year, if your student will be absent from school for any reason, please submit the attendance form (https://bit.ly/SLPHSAbsenceForm), on the website within 24 hours. Please be prepared to report the following information: student name, grade, date of absence, reason for absence and your name/relationship. Any absence not excused within 24 hours will remain unexcused. Students can not excuse themselves. 

In an effort to clearly communicate school-wide expectations and agreements, SLPHS is requesting that all students and families review the newest edition of the Student & Family Handbook for the 2022-23 school year. This week students will spend time reviewing this document in their classes. Students will be required to complete a Student & Family acknowledgement form during week 1 of school. Thank you for partnering with SLPHS.
