CELL PHONE LETTER TO PARENTS

Parents/Guardians/Caregivers,

We are writing to inform you of our school's cell phone and personal device policy for the 2024-2025 school year. While cell phones have become a significant part of daily life, in the classroom they can often be a distraction. Starting from the first day of school, cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, and similar devices will not be allowed during instructional time. This change aims to foster a more focused and positive learning environment. Students may use their devices during passing periods and lunch.

We believe this policy will help students stay engaged in class and reduce distractions. Research shows that excessive cell phone use can negatively impact mental health, and limiting their use at school supports our commitment to student well-being.

We understand the importance of staying connected for safety reasons. In case of urgent messages, please use the school phone number 952-928-6100, and we will promptly relay them to your student.

If a student is found using a device during instructional time, it will be collected and brought to the office, and parents will be notified. Please review the attached policy with your student.

Thank you for your support in maintaining a focused and healthy learning environment. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

SLPHS Administration

Personal Electronics Policy-SLPHS

SLPHS Students may possess or use personal electronic devices on school property, on school buses, or at school-sponsored events according to the following guidelines:

Cell phones/electronic devices/earbuds may be used:

  • Before school until the beginning of the school day at 8:25 a.m.
  • During a student’s passing time
  • During a student’s assigned lunch period
  • After school, beginning at 3:15 p.m.
  • Personal electronics should be put away during instructional time. During class time electronics should be kept in your backpack, purse, or pocket and completely silenced.
  • Students whose electronics are seen or heard during instructional time may have their devices confiscated.

All classrooms are equipped with a landline. There is no reason that a student should need to use a cell phone during the regular school day instructional time. We do recognize that cell phones can be a safety or security tool. In any instance requiring an emergency communication with a student, our school will immediately assist the student, a parent, or other responsible adult with that situation.

*This policy does not apply to school-issued Chromebooks. These are considered instructional tools for our 1:1 platform.

RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY AT ST. LOUIS PARK HIGH SCHOOL

Join us at 5:00 pm for the SLPHS official ribbon cutting ceremony, September 5th.  This ceremony is to celebrate and showcase the finished construction at SLPHS.  This event will be followed by Family Engagement Night beginning at 5:30 pm.  More information will follow.  We hope to see you there.

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT NIGHT THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26TH

St. Louis Park High School would like to welcome families to join us for Family Engagement Night on September 26th, from 5:30 pm-7:30 pm.

During Family Engagement Night, families will follow their student’s bell schedule, so attending for the full 2 hours will allow for the best experience.

Families can meet each of their student’s teachers during a 10-15 minute block of time and go through all 7 periods. If a family has multiple students attending the HS, they can decide which schedule and classes to attend.

The purpose of Family Engagement Night is to:

  1. Connect: Establish a clear line of communication between teachers and families to enhance student success.
  2. Inform: Allow families to experience what their student’s school day is like and give them detailed information about their classes.
  3. Build Community: Foster a sense of community and partnership between the school and families.

Overall, St. Louis Park High School’s Family Engagement Night aims to equip families with the knowledge and tools they need to support their child's learning and development. Please reach out to the Assistant Principals with any questions: Alonzo Parks parks.alonzo@slpschools.org (Grades 10 and 12) and Evelyn Lashley lashley.evelyn@slpschools.org (Grades 9 and 11).

FALL CONFERENCES OCTOBER 7-11TH

On Friday, October 11th, there will be no school for students, and teachers will have drop-in availability in person from 7:30 am-3:30 pm at school.

WAYS YOU CAN HELP

Save the date! Start your day off with Coffee with the Principal (CWTP)

Meet at the High School front office at 8:30 a.m. to connect with the administration by asking questions, and sharing experiences.

  • Tuesday, Dec. 3
  • Friday, Mar. 7

Save the date! Attend the 3 PEAC meetings where the Principal team and key department stakeholders will share updates about our school community, culture and activities that impact students (e.g., academic progress and the good work of our students and staff, equitable learning environment, safety).

  • Wednesday, Oct. 30 from 5:45 - 6:45 p.m. at the High School (ahead of the Orchestra Fall Pop Concert at 7:00 p.m.)
  • Monday, Jan. 13 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. via Zoom
  • Thursday, April 10 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the High School

  • Staff gift bags Prepare and distribute gift bags 2x a year ~ 2 hours each time (one volunteer in place - need one more to lighten the load)

  • Ongoing needs throughout the year (Deliver your contribution to the front office (door 1)):
  • Help staff reward great behavior. Donate student incentives (especially needed early in year) for staff to leverage as they catch kids doing good.  Best things to contribute:
  • $5 Target, Cub or Holiday gift cards
  • Candy bars, small box or bags of candy, (no nuts please)
  • Individually wrapped chip snack bags
  • Fruit Snacks
  • K-Cups and/or coffee sweeteners for the Staff break room

  • Donate 2-3 hours of your time for Staff Appreciation Week Lead a luncheon and snacks early in May.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?

Create a great offer by adding words like "free," "personalized," "complimentary," or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take action, so consider inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
