February 1st begins Black History Month. This year’s theme focuses on Black Resistance: A Journey to Equality. This month we honor and celebrate the contributions of African Americans both past and present in serving Black communities across the nation.
As an SLPHS commUNITY it is our collective responsibility to actualize and embrace our core values of persistent effort as anti-racist leaders by increasing our individual racial and cultural competence to ensure equity and inclusion for all students. Our resistance is realized when we engage our students in culturally relevant and responsive instruction that elevates their consciousness and requires them to challenge the status quo. This month and every month we invite you to join in solidarity as we uplift our commUNITY to live in their brilliance.

Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) – For all grades
The registration process is very important to help us plan for courses next year. Parents/guardians are highly encouraged to review the course requests with their students so they can discuss appropriate choices. Informed and thoughtful decisions about course selections is crucial. Administration determines teachers, staffing, class sections, and class cancellations based on student selection in February. Schedule changes in the fall will continue to be extremely limited.

As we start the 2nd half of the school year we would like to remind students and parents about student pick-up locations and overall safety reminders.
- At no time should students be walking between buses.
- No parent pick-up on 33rd street while buses are present.
- Parent pick-up is located in parking lot by door #1
- Students should not be crossing the street (33rd Street or Dakota Ave) except at designated crosswalks.
- Crosswalks locations:
- Florida Ave & 33rd St.
- Edgewood Ave & 33rd St.
- Dakota Ave. & 33rd St.
- Dakota Ave. & W Lake St.
- There is no designated crosswalk at Dakota Ave. by the train tracks and it is a dangerous area to cross. Please remind students not to cross the street at this spot.

All students who are in need of an elevator pass must bring in a physical copy of their doctor's note to our HS nurse. This note should contain the student's name, reasoning for elevator pass (Injury), and should also include an expiration date. | |
UPDATE ON THE ORIOLES' NEST | |
The Orioles’ Nest after school program will be closed the following dates: 1/26, 1/31, 2/1 and 2/2. Please ensure your students are able to get home at 3:15pm. The Nest will resume on 2/7. | |

We are walking in a winter wonderland towards the 2023 SnoDaze Dance. Join your fellow snow-people in the field house on Saturday, February 11th from 7 to 10 pm. Students must follow all school guidelines and expectations. Doors will open at 6:30 pm. There will be no re-entry. We will not take cash or sell tickets at the door. You MUST buy in advance by noon on Friday, February 10th. To bring a non-SLP guest, students must have the guest form signed and turned in by Tuesday, February 7th to the main office.

St Louis Park Esports is recruiting gamers for the Spring 2023 season. Come participate in a team sport environment centered around something you are truly passionate about. You will meet like minded gamers who have similar interests, and team up with them to compete against other Minnesota schools in multiple titles, culminating in one huge LAN at the Mall of America.
If you are interested in hearing more about esports, come to our Spring Season Informational Meeting in room B225 on Tuesday, February 7th at 3:30pm. If you cannot attend, please email advisor Carl Sorenson at sorenson.carl@slpschools.org.
The games we run are: League of Legends, Rocket League, Valorant, Minecraft Bedwars, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, Chess, Apex Legends, Smite, and Fortnite.
We are also looking for teams to run social media, broadcasting, and team management if you want to get involved but not compete.
Lastly, Congratulations SLP for getting 3rd place in the State Finals for Varsity Valorant this fall! This is the biggest league in the state and we are among the top contenders every season. Good job SLP!

Ms. Alison Recommends… Starfish by Meyer (won the William C. Morris Debut YA Award in 2018). This book punches you in the emotional gut. Written in verse, Fipps creates a narrative anyone can relate to. Even though this is a middle grade book, high school students will relate to the emotions of the many characters. This is a must read for all.

VAPING- PARENT/CAREGIVER PERSPECTIVE NEEDED | |
|
We all recognize the challenges that vaping holds for our students. There are serious health risks in their young developing bodies and brains. In addition, it can have impact on their academic performance and school engagement.
We have recently received a grant specifically to address vaping from the Minnesota Department of Health through Hennepin County. The goal of the grant is to strengthen the implementation of the comprehensive approach to youth vaping prevention in secondary schools. In doing so, this will result in decreased youth vaping, increased perception of vaping harm, reduced school violations and decreased staff time and energy needed to address substance use.
We are in the information seeking phase with various stakeholders. We want to gather parent/caregiver feedback and perspective. Please take 5 minutes to complete this anonymous vaping survey.

What is PSEO?
PSEO stands for Post-Secondary Enrollment Options, and is a program that allows high school students in grades 10, 11 & 12 to take college courses for free. These courses provide students an opportunity to earn college credits while also meeting their high school graduation requirements. For more information, please attend one of these meetings.

The Central Community Clinic is a free, walk-in clinic for children from birth to high school who live or go to public or private schools in St. Louis Park. Central Clinic's mission is to reduce barriers to healthcare for the children and youth of our community.
Services are no-cost and include:
- treatment for acute illness and injuries
- well-child/baby check-ups
- immunizations and vaccines (for uninsured/Medical Assistance/MNCARE)
- sports and camp physicals
- sexual health care
Interpreters can be arranged by calling ahead of time. At this time, Central Clinic is not able to administer Covid vaccines.
Hours: Tuesdays & Thursdays from 1:00-4:30 p.m.

EARLY CHILDHOOD SCREENING | |

The state of Minnesota requires all children to complete an Early Childhood Screening before entering kindergarten. The screening is most valuable at age 3.5 years old.
Early Childhood Screenings:
- include a vision, hearing, and developmental assessment as well as an opportunity to discuss any circumstances that you feel may affect your child's learning readiness.
- identify any areas in which your child may benefit from early childhood services before they enter kindergarten
- can connect families with appropriate resources and programs to best support their child
- take approximately 45 minutes to one hour to complete
