Dear Parents/Families of current Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors:

Course selection for the 2025-2026 school year is fast approaching.

February Registration Timeline:

● Week of February 3rd.

○ Information about elective choices presented in Social Studies classes.

○ English, Social Studies, Math & Science teachers will be discussing options for the 2025-26 school year.

○ Parents/Guardians should attend Registration Informational Session by grade level as listed below for more information:

Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) – For all grades

● Students will hear general information regarding PSEO during the classroom informational presentations.

● There will be dates of PSEO specific meetings for students to attend

● Parent/Guardian PSEO Informational Session - Thursday, February 25th 7:00-8:00 pm Zoom Link.

● Information is currently on the HS website https://hs.slpschools.org/academics/pseo. Updates with meeting dates coming soon.

The registration process is very important to help us plan for courses next year. Parents/guardians are highly encouraged to review the course requests with their students so they can discuss appropriate choices. Informed and thoughtful decisions about course selections is crucial. Administration determines teachers, staffing, class sections, class cancellations based on student selection in February. Schedule changes in the fall will continue to be extremely limited.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Congratulations to our SLP DECA Members!

These fine young leaders and entrepreneurs impressed the District 7 judges with their communication, creativity and critical thinking skills at the District level competition last Sunday. 15 students will advance to State level competition March 2-4!

On Wednesday, January 24, the Orioles nordic ski team competed in an all day Conference Championship ski meet. The skiers competed in either the pursuit race (classic technique in the morning followed by a skate race in the afternoon) or the sprint relays (prelims in the morning and finals in the afternoon). It was an exhausting but exciting day for the skiers with the Orioles bringing home many All-Conference honors! After adding up all the points from both pursuit and relay races, the boys team finished third place overall and the girls took home the conference title!

What Is a Family Preparedness Plan?

A family preparedness plan is a detailed strategy that includes:

How family members will stay in touch or reconnect if separated.
Delegation of Parental Authority (DOPA) in case a caregiver needs to be established.
Safe locations both near your home and outside your neighborhood.
Evacuation routes of the safest ways to leave your home or area during emergencies.
Emergency kits with essentials like water, food, medication, and important documents.
Information for specific needs such as mobility assistance, pets, or medical equipment.

Why Is It Important?

A preparedness plan minimizes confusion and helps families respond quickly and effectively during emergencies such as natural disasters, power outages, or other unexpected events. It’s especially vital for protecting vulnerable family members like children, elderly relatives, or individuals with special needs.

What is a Delegation of Parental Authority (DOPA)?

A Delegation of Parental Authority (DOPA) is a document that lets someone take care of your children when you can’t.

The person you give this permission to is called an “Attorney-in-Fact.”

A DOPA gives permission for someone else to make decisions about your child’s care, custody, and property. It is the same as if you made the decision yourself. This means that someone with a DOPA can take your child to the doctor for medical treatment. They can also excuse the child from school for things like illnesses, medical appointments, or other issues. A DOPA does not give permission to decide things like adoption or marriage.

A DOPA does not take away any of your rights to make decisions for your children. You can still override any decisions made by the Attorney-in-Fact, and a separate DOPA is required for each child.

By sharing your situation and plans with the DOPA, they can relay updates to other family members, ensuring everyone stays informed.

Steps to Create Your Family Preparedness Plan:

Hold a Family Meeting: Discuss possible emergencies and the importance of planning ahead.
Choose a DOPA: Pick a reliable contact and share their information with your family.
Designate Roles: Assign responsibilities like grabbing the emergency kit, calling the DOPA, or securing pets.
Create and Share Your Plan: Write it down, distribute copies to family members, and practice your plan regularly.
Build Emergency Kits: Include essentials such as water, non-perishable food, first aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, medications, and important documents.

Preparation today can make all the difference tomorrow. By creating and practicing your family preparedness plan, you’re taking a vital step in protecting those you care about most.
