Greetings!

It’s a great day to be an Oriole.  As a commUNITY we have so many reasons to be grateful as we head into the 4th week of the school year.  I want to take a moment to highlight the brilliance of our student leaders.  Our high school students have worked to create opportunities for learning through student-led events, advocating through student voice, and participating in events that challenge systems of racial inequities.  Our students are models in empowering our commUNITY as demonstrated in their leadership.  I hope you enjoy this edition as we celebrate our student leaders.

Congratulations to Sebastian Tangelson and Isaac Israel for their outstanding planning and coordination of the Student Voter Registration Kick-off held on September, 20th, for National Voter Registration Day.  Students learned about the power of voting.  Guest speakers included Lieutenant Governor and alumna, Peggy Flanagan, and City Council Member Larry Kraft. 

Two St. Louis Park High School seniors have recently been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Denly Lindeman and Gwendolyn Rockler-Gladen are recognized as National Merit Semifinalists.  

Semifinalists are selected based on scores from the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) and are now eligible to compete for scholarships that will be awarded in the spring of 2023.

On Wednesday, September 21st, St. Louis Park High School hosted almost 300 student leaders in athletics, fine arts and other activities from 33 metro high school’s (including SLPHS) for a Minnesota State High School conference to raise awareness about student conduct, bullying, gender, race and other issues.  The conference was facilitated by Paula Forbes and other staff from the Forbes Solutions organization. The conference was one of seven the MSHSL is hosting this fall across the State of Minnesota as part of their “Together We Make a Difference” initiative.

St. Louis Park High School Staff get together to organize activities for Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month. Meet our amazing Latino staff at the HS and District Office

We’ve been asked by Staff to help decorate for the Homecoming dance on Saturday, 10/8.  We’re looking for 12 volunteers from noon - 2:00 pm to set up and decorate the High School Field House.

Help Build Trust in School District Finance: Join the Financial Advisory Committee

Want to learn more about school finance? We invite families and community members to apply to join the Financial Advisory Committee. You do not need a finance background to join. The Committee advises administration and the school board on economic and school finance issues and builds community trust in school district finances. 

• Apply by October 15, 2022
• No finance experience and background required 
• Attend approximately 8-10 meetings (1.5 hours each). We meet monthly beginning October 26.

SLP Homecoming Expectations for October 7, 2022

We invite all St Louis Park Public Schools families to join us on October 7, 2022 for Homecoming. 

• Any child in 8th grade or below must be accompanied by a paying adult who is responsible for them, their behavior and their whereabouts at the game.  The student must be in the bleachers unless with the accompanying adult.  
• No bags, backpacks or outside food/drink will be allowed in. No reentry.  Please remember there are no cash ticket sales and no refunds. 
• Admission will stop at the end of the third quarter.

Parade 

Friday, October 7th, 4:30 pm

All school clubs and activities are welcome and encouraged to participate in the parade. It will begin in the long lot of the high school and use the immediate block around the school, ending at Central Community Center for a tailgate party hosted by the Touchdown Club! Plan to be in place no later than 4:15 pm.

Saturday, October 8th, 7 pm to 11 pm

Students must follow all school guidelines and expectations. Doors will open at 6:30 pm and you must arrive at the dance by 8:00 pm. There will be no re-entry. Students may not bring outside food or drink. 

To bring a non-SLP guest, students must have a guest form signed and turned in by Wednesday, October 5th to the main office. Forms available in the main office. Ticket sales close at 5 pm the day of the dance.

Dress code: Casual dance - come as you are.

Homecoming Royalty

Throughout the week of September 26, students will nominate peers in their grade for Homecoming Court. Four students from each grade will be chosen to represent their class. Final voting for four Homecoming Royalty will occur Monday, October 3rd through Wednesday, October 5th.

The Royalty will be announced during the pep fest on Friday, October 7th. Royalty are expected to be in the parade.

Family Fun and Food Trucks at Homecoming

All residents, families and alumni are invited to join together for this year's Homecoming events! There will be a student parade, food trucks from 5pm - 7pm in the parking lot behind the stadium, photo opportunities with the Oriole, and the football game vs Holy Angels with kickoff at 7pm.

Incoming seniors that are on-track to graduate spring of 2023 will be eligible for guaranteed admissions in up to 51+ MN postsecondary institutions. OHE direct admissions provides waived application fees to participating MN colleges and universities with guaranteed admission. In early October, students will receive notification of their qualifying tier with the list of institutions they can apply for at no cost. More information will be provided as we head into the 2022-23 school year. For questions please contact Kara Mueller mueller.kara@slpschools.org.

In an effort to clearly communicate school-wide expectations and agreements, SLPHS is requesting that all students and families review the newest edition of the Student & Family Handbook for the 2022-23 school year. This week students will spend time reviewing this document in their classes. Students will be required to complete a Student & Family acknowledgement form during week 1 of school. Thank you for partnering with SLPHS.

Parents want the best for their children and teens. That means helping them with homework, encouraging their hobbies, and … talking about sex and relationships! During Let’s Talk Month each year, young people and parents are encouraged to communicate with one another about sexuality. -Planned Parenthood

The Annex Teen Clinic wants to provide parenting adults, caregivers, and trusted adults with two opportunities to grow their understanding of how to have conversations with the young people in their life around sexuality!

About the virtual workshops: Please note these workshops are identical.

Research shows that parents and caregivers have the most influence on their child/children during early adolescence. This is a perfect opportunity to have conversations with your child around sensitive topics like sexuality, sex, and relationships. During this workshop, you will grow your knowledge about sexuality, learn tips and tricks to having these conversations with your child/children, and expand your confidence in engaging in these important topics with your teen.

After you attend a workshop, you will receive a family fun box! The family fun box was curated by Annex Teen Clinic parent educators to promote open communication and connectedness with parents and their teens.

Students, did you and your caretaker sign the Digital Learning Device Agreement?  If not, please return your Digital Learning Device Agreement For Students and Caregivers signed by the student and the caregiver to the Media Center if you received a paper copy. You can also  go online to PowerSchool to fill out the forms. 

To fill out the form online go to the Parent Portal:

1. Select the student you wish to register along the top
2. Select the Student Registration Icon on the left side
3. Agree to the terms and conditions
4. Select Begin Forms

Have any books you are not reading anymore? Return them to the media center! 

Reminder, loaner Chromebooks are only given to students that need to have their device repaired. The Media Center will not check out loaner Chromebooks to students just to use for the day. We will not checkout a loaner Chromebook if a student forgot their device at home.

We are moving away from the "essential volunteer/visitor" restrictions but want to reiterate that volunteers in schools must follow the volunteer process. All community volunteers are asked to complete the volunteer application and placement process with the Volunteer Program.  A community volunteer is anyone who wants to volunteer with St. Louis Park Public Schools who is NOT a current SLP student or staff member or a parent volunteering with their child's class.  Any interested volunteers contact Angie Martinez Grande, martinez.angela@slpschools.org and fill out the Volunteer Application.
