1: From the Interim Principal

Hello SLP Families,
Spring is here and we are thrilled to be planning several exciting spring events, especially for our seniors! Please read on so you are aware of what is happening so you can participate and make some new and special memories as we near the end of this incredible year.
Next Monday, May 3rd, our band has planned an outdoor concert from 6:00 - 8:00pm in the grassy area between the field house and the track. An Ice Cream truck will be there for treats, too. If weather requires a cancellation, they will move the concert to May 4th.
This year, we are hosting two separate Proms. Friday, May 14th is our Junior Prom from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 15th is our Senior Prom from 8:00 - 10:00pm. Both events will be at the outdoor setting at The Roc(St. Louis Park Recreation Center). More details are included in this newsletter.
Save the date: A Virtual Celebration of the Class of 2021 on May 19 at 7pm on St. Louis Park Schools YouTube page. The link will be sent closer to the date. All seniors will be recognized and celebrated for their accomplishments and a glance into their future plans. Academic awards and Dollars for Scholars Scholarships will announced, more than $125 Thousand dollars will be given away. Join us as we honor the Class of 2021 in this virtual way as we prepare for graduation.
On June 3rd, our orchestra will be performing outdoors behind the fieldhouse. Chairs will be provided and as in all celebrations and activities, masking and social distancing must be maintained by all who attend.
We are especially excited for our outdoor graduation ceremony on our beautiful stadium field on Tuesday, June 8, at 7:00 pm. Many more details will follow in the weeks ahead, but I wanted you to get these important dates on your calendars as we plan to celebrate and honor our amazing students.
Lastly, it’s teacher appreciation week next week and I invite you to email a teacher or have your child let a teacher know how much they are appreciated.

3: Concert Choir/Park Singers News
|
|
Senior Leo Dworsky, a member of both Concert Choir & Park Singers, has been accumulating wins in a number of vocal competitions. Earlier this year he was the winner of Minnesota Varsity, through Minnesota Public Radio (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esMScD68zhA) and just recently was awarded the Groth Music Scholarship , which provides a renewal financial award for college, and now has been named the high school winner of the vocal competition in the Thursday Musical contest, which also awarded a financial prize. |

Junior Prom, May 14th 7-9pm
Senior Prom, May 15th, 8-10pm
Ticket sales will be online and will be $10 each so watch for more details to come!
Tickets must be purchased by SLP juniors and seniors only on their designated day. They can purchase one or two tickets and their guest ticket can be another grade level student from SLP.
Attire will be formal, and the theme will be announced soon! Get excited Park students!
Ticket will include music, activities, photos, party favors and a surprise dessert food truck! :)

5: Vaccine Information for Students Ages 16 and Up
|
|
The Minnesota Department of Health is launching “Roll Up Your Sleeves, Teens” week beginning Tuesday, April 27 extending through Saturday, May 1. During this week, appointments will be prioritized for 16- and 17-year-olds and their parents at Minnesota’s Mall of America Community Vaccination Site.

Only the Pfizer vaccine has been authorized to vaccinate youth ages 16 and older and will only be administered to those ages.
Children under the age of 18 must have consent signed on their behalf by a parent or guardian when scheduling an online appointment. It is very important that the scheduling forms are filled out correctly in advance and to have a parent or legal guardian go to the vaccine appointment with their 16- or 17- year-old to learn about the COVID-19 vaccine and provide consent for the child to receive the vaccine. If children under the age of 18 arrive at the Mall of America vaccination site without a parent, The Community Vaccination Program will vaccinate if the attestation box on the pre-registration form is checked and the parent has signed the consent. If the parent/guardian has not signed the consent in advance, The Community Vaccination Program can accept written consent from a parent/guardian accompanying the minor child to the appointment. If a parent/guardian is not present, staff will request that the patient call their parent/guardian and staff will attempt to obtain verbal consent. If staff are not able to obtain pre-registration or onsite verbal/written consent, staff are not allowed to vaccinate the patient.

6: Covid-19 VS Allergy/Cold/Flu season
|
|
COVID-19 vs. Allergies: Do I Need to Quarantine?
STUDENT & FAMILY Information Regarding Allergy/Cold/Flu Season
Some symptoms of general illness such as seasonal allergies, colds, and/or flu overlap with symptoms of COVID-19. If a parent/guardian/family member believes their child/student has any illness - which displays the same symptoms as COVID-19 - the student, and other household members, are not allowed to attend school until:
The symptomatic student tests negative for COVID-19; or
An alternative diagnosis (such as allergies, cold, or flu) is received from the child’s/student’s health care provider in written form and copied to the school health office.
If the student with symptoms does not test for COVID-19, or receive an alternative diagnosis from their health care provider, they would need to isolate at home for 10 days and household members would follow the 14 day quarantine protocol.

7: School Nutrition Meal Pick Up
|
|
Meal pickup schedule for distance learners:
- Mondays & Wednesdays 11:45am-12:45pm
Breakfast and lunch is available for students in the building daily. All meals are free for students!

8: Lock Down Drills to Start
|
|
Next week we will be doing our first 1 of 5 lock down drills. These will be done pretty rapidly in the month of May. The only change is that teachers will be doing simulation drills explaining the procedures to follow during the lock down drill. There will be an announcement May 6 at 1:45. The first time Office Smith will read the expectations over the intercom. If there are any questions, the classroom teacher will address them in your student's room. |

9: Desire To Lead: Sport Accessibility Fundraiser
|
|
Desire to Lead is a group of student-athlete leaders that are working toward providing a more accessible sports experience at the high school. We are soliciting donations that will help lower the barrier for students that would like to participate in sports next fall. The money raised during this fundraiser will help provide needed sports equipment for students that may not otherwise be able to participate.

Due to Hybrid/Distance Learning this year many of the AP Teachers asked for more time to cover the material.
College Board, the company that runs AP Exams has granted permission for us to lengthen our test window from two weeks to five weeks. Please see the High School website for the new schedule. https://www.slpschools.org/Page/1794
Students who would like to cancel their exam may do so prior to 11:59pm on May 27 or their exam day whichever comes first. The $70 base fee for the exam will be refunded.* Please go to Total Registration to cancel the exam and receive a refund. https://user.totalregistration.net/student/login.php
*This is a one year exception to the College Board no cancellations rule

Attention 10th Graders, College Possible is currently recruiting for students to be a part of next year's cohort. Students watched this video in Connections this week to learn more about the program and the requirements.

Do you have a high achieving 9th grade student that qualifies for free & reduced lunch? If so, then they might be eligible and interested in finding out more about a program called Minds Matter. Minds Matter works with a cohort of students on Saturdays throughout the school year to increase ACT scores, help them with resume building as well as the college application process. They also are able to have a summer experience on a college campus - all at no cost to the student. Find out more about the program here:
