RAMADAN

In recognition of Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community. This year, it will take place from March 10 to April 9. Practicing Muslim students will be fasting from dawn until dusk (approx. 5:30 a.m to 7:30 p.m). During their daily fasts, students will not partake in any food or beverage. Please be aware of what we are sharing with SLP staff about how they can provide support to students during this time:

  • Understanding and patience: Students may show signs of exhaustion, hunger and dehydration. Celebrations often involve gatherings and prayers late into the night, so it’s not unusual for students to be up past midnight for prayers and then get up at 3:30-4 a.m. to eat before dawn. Even students who do not fast may be tired as they may stay up late celebrating with their families.
  • Diversity within diversity: There is diversity within diversity, and not everyone will observe in the same way. Do not ask why someone may choose not to fast. There are many reasons why someone might not fast - it is not appropriate to ask about this.
  • Fasting: Educators may provide spaces for students to be away from others while eating and drinking is present. It is best to allow students a separate place.
  • Prayer spaces: Help to direct students to designated prayer spaces. Fasting students may request a space for prayer, and they will need to face East. Students may pray five or more times per day.
  • Acknowledgement: It’s also appropriate to say “Happy Ramadan, “Ramadan Kareem,” “Happy Mubarak,” “Ramadan Mubarak” if you wish to acknowledge the holiday.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

JA + DECA + Peter Hobert Kinders = HUGE Impact

as we reflect on the lasting impact created by the DECA students, it’s evident that the seeds of inspiration on this day will continue to flourish. We are grateful for the invaluable role the DECA students embrace in shaping not only the educational journey but also fostering their own leadership potential and personal development. The DECA students are truly instrumental in creating a positive ripple effect that extends far beyond the classroom – and JA is honored to be a part of that.”

- Amanda Hillman, JA Director of Metro Programs

This year, DECA students are teaming up with Junior Achievement North to bring days of learning to Peter Hobert students. This past week, our students spent the day in all PH Kindergarten classrooms sharing their brilliance.

AROUND THE SCHOOL

Are you getting enough sleep?

It's recommended that teenagers get 9-12 hours of sleep each night. Getting adequate sleep reduces stress, restores our immune system, boosts our mood, and improves memory. Sleeping well is even associated with better grades and increased energy throughout the day. If you are a student, sleep is an especially important part of your education! Check out the Tips for Better Sleep | Change to Chill

FINAL PEAC MEETING

Mark your calendar and attend our final PEAC meeting of the school year on April 16 (7:00 - 8:00 p.m) in person at the high school. Here’s where you can get important updates from the Principal team and key department stakeholders.

Learn fun facts about the high school experience. Big and small, there is a lot to be proud of. Did you know…

  • Each year approximately 50 students become Certified Nursing Assistants, which allows them to begin working in jobs with average pay of $28 per hour and they are that much closer to getting their nursing degrees?

  • 55 Personal Finance students were invited to JA Finance Park, which is part Junior Achievement. This visit encompassed important elements of personal financial literacy and career awareness, and each student became an adult for the day - responsible for planning a monthly budget for themselves and their fictional families.

JOIN THE TEAM

If you are interested in being part of the PEAC, we’d love to have you join the team. Please send us a note at [email protected].

Thank you!
