Greetings!
This week I had the honor of joining an Non Traditional Academy (NTA) science classroom as they engaged in deep discussion. I was in the presence of brilliance as students challenged, inquired, offered perspective while thinking critically about the world around them. Each interaction with our young people is a reminder of how important it is to empower our students, lift up their voice, so they can share their gifts with the world. When you surround yourself with the brilliance of others, there is no other choice but to live and shine in your own brilliance.

Partnering in Holding High Expectations for SLPHS Students |
|
Our mission at SLPHS is to create a safe community where students are able to live in their brilliance both socially and academically. In an effort to create a positive culture and climate where learning thrives and students remain at the center of our community, we are asking families and caregivers to partner in having conversations with your students regarding school expectations and the importance of maximizing their instructional time.
This includes:
- Arriving at school on time daily and being in class on-time, every period daily. Students belong in class during instructional time where teaching and learning is taking place.
- Interacting with peers appropriately and/or asking for help from our student support team when conflict arises.
- Responding appropriately to reasonable requests and/or redirections from staff with regards to school expectations.
- Use of school appropriate language that has purpose in an educational setting.
- Care and respect for our physical space and keeping these spaces clean and damage free.
- Coming prepared to learn each and every day.
We know we cannot do this work alone and ask that families reinforce school expectations so we are able to live into the SLP Mission, Vision, and Core Values. We also know the challenges that we face with regards to social-emotional safety and mental health and wellness. Our team of counselors and social workers are available in the event your student needs additional support. Students will be offered tiered-interventions from our student support team of administrators & achievement and support coordinators (ASC) when necessary. Thank you for your continued collaboration and partnership.

Students Staying After School |
|
Students are only allowed to stay after school if they are participating in an organized school activity. Students are expected to exit the building at 3:30 pm or immediately after their organized school activity has concluded. Students will be asked to exit the building after 3:30 pm if they have not reported to a supervised activity. |

Food Outside of Cafeteria & Other Designated Areas |
|
This is a reminder that students should not be bringing food and drink outside of the cafeteria and/or designated areas. This includes walking through hallways with food and/or drink. Students are expected to dispose of garbage in the appropriate garbage receptacles. Students will be asked to dispose of their food/drink before entering the classroom.
In addition, it is expected that students clean up after themselves by throwing their garbage into garbage cans at lunch. Seniors that leave school for lunch should throw their food garbage in an appropriate garbage receptacle before returning to the building. Under NO circumstances should food be disposed of in the school parking lot or on school grounds. Please do your part in keeping our school clean and respecting our campus grounds.

Students are expected to be in class during instructional time.
Students that are in the hallway during instructional time are required to have a pass issued from their teacher with a clear purpose describing why they are missing instructional time.
Students are encouraged to use the restroom during passing time. Teachers will only allow one student to use the bathroom at a time and students should have a pass.
Students are expected to be in the classroom space during instructional time unless supervised by their teacher or other staff person.
Students without a pass will be asked to present one. Students without a pass will be asked or escorted to return to their class.

Excused Absences & Tardies During Class Time |
|
Students that are assigned to a course and/or study hall are expected to report on time and remain for the entire period. Students that come to class significantly late to class, skip class, or leave before the period without permission will be marked absent unexcused. Attendance will not be changed unless there is a lawful excused absence (please reference the student handbook).
NOTE: Students that have an open hour must exit the building and leave campus. Students that are assigned PSEO or similar programming are asked to report to their assigned area of the building.

Students, please make sure you are bringing your fully charged Chromebook to school each day for instructional purposes. |

As for baby ad info and how to submit baby ads:
After purchasing a baby ad, you will receive an email within 24 hours saying your ad is ready to be created. Go to Balfour.com and log in with the username and password you created when checking out. You will then be able to upload your image and note.

Multiple teams from SLP made it to state in esports and will be competed this weekend against other MN schools for the state title in 4 different games.
This season was very competitive, with now over 50 schools in MN competing (remember when we were the first one?). If you want to watch any of the tournaments they are being streamed on twitch.tv/mnvl (Schedule Attached)

SLPHS Band News:
Congratulations to Carlitos Anguita-Smith, Jacy Demcisak, Allison House, and Rose Huse for their acceptance into the St. Olaf College Honor Band! On Saturday, November 13th, they rehearsed at St. Olaf College in Northfield in full group and sectionals for about five hours. They put on a wonderful concert at 4pm that featured work of Cuban-American composer Tania León. The approximately 100 students from throughout the upper Midwest had the honor of working with Dr. Timothy Mahr of St. Olaf College and Dr. Katherine Bushman of St. Cloud State University and St. Olaf College.

On Friday, November 19th, all band students got a special opportunity, as part of Native American/Indigenous Heritage Month, to speak with Brent Michael Davids over Zoom. Mr. Davids is a classical, band, and film composer and lives on the Mohican Nation Reservation in Wisconsin. He taught the students about film music, being a Native American composer in a majority white field, developing their creativity, and about his path to this career path.
