1: From the Interim Principal

Greetings SLP Families,
It’s unbelievable to realize that we have nearly reached the end of this school year! The seniors received their caps, gowns, stoles, 8 commencement tickets, and award certificates on Wednesday, June 2. While we wish we could invite the entire community to our Commencement ceremony on Tuesday, June 8th, we are only allowed to have 3,000 guests, which equates to 8 tickets per graduate.
This week, we have many students working extremely hard to complete their assigned work in order to complete their courses and earn credit. Remember, all students/families have the option to choose a Pass/Fail option for any class up until the last day of school. If your student is interested in attending summer school to either complete a first semester course or earn new or make-up credit, please contact your child’s counselor for registration information.
On Tuesday, some of our students planned for and engaged in a conversation in the auditorium regarding their perspectives on what is going on in the Middle East. Superintendent Osei said, “We work to create safe spaces for our students to strengthen their social political consciousness and advocate for things that are important to them.” These students planned to exercise their First Amendment right to express what they described as their “humanitarian concerns for the killing of innocent children in Palestine.”
Students in attendance were reminded that the purpose was to provide a safe space to exercise their First Amendment right of free speech, and have their voices heard, not to debate or argue the beliefs of those who chose to speak. Multiple perspectives were shared and the student facilitators worked to ensure all voices were heard, respected and valued.
Our district’s Mission Statement reinforces our collective belief that it’s important to “create an environment that centers student voice and experience to create racially equitable learning that energizes and enhances the spirit of our community.” And, it’s important to note that it is never okay to harass, humiliate, or put down anyone whose opinions, religion, race, gender or anything else are different from one’s own.

Victoria Palma Juarez is a Senior who has been a part of cohort C this past school year. While Victoria chose to stay in cohort C once school was back in person, she says she still benefited from the opportunity to work virtually with teachers or come in on Wednesdays for one on one help when fewer students were in the building. She also commented that she liked being away from distractions at home. Victoria typically works with Ms Conroy virtually or in person in the Learning Lab. Victoria has known Ms Conroy since her sophomore year so it was natural for them to connect during distance learning. Victoria will be graduating next week and plans on attending MCTC with an interest in being a dietician. She is looking forward to some free time this summer which she well deserves. Congratulations Victoria, Class of 2021!

Shaakir Farrah is a freshman here at the high school. He’s quiet but yet very intriguing once you get to know him. I met Shaakir during cohort A & B and we would chat once he got off the bus. He has always been interested in getting more help, especially from the media center, the counselors or GLC’s in the Oriels’s Nest! Shaakir has always been focused on his work and what he wanted to accomplish next. When I asked Shaakir why he attended the Oriels’s Nest so often he said “I wanted to get the work done. I wanted to get a head on my work so I could find more time for myself. To do things that I enjoy, other than school work.” When Shaakir is finished with his school work he likes to read, watch movies and tv shows. Shaakir says “its important to balance the amount of school work and free time spent throughout the day.”

Do you find it helpful to meet with teachers on day like this? Yes! I had a chance to meet with my teachers about my credits and see exactly whereI’m at with percentages.
What advice would you give your peers in regards to school and education as a whole?
Take a few hours a day to finish work, late work
Take time to do what you want to do and what you need to do. Most importantly.

Natural Helpers, a peer helper group, held their last meeting and reflected on what they have accomplished this year: Mental Health advocacy through Park Connections, Virtual Chill Room, Middle School outreach, Staff appreciation card making, and Annual Training. Thank you Natural Helpers for making our school a positive and welcoming place!

These workshops will be provided virtually to help accommodate busy schedules. Learn about topics regarding gender, sexuality, relationships and much more. 8: Strength & Conditioning: Registration is Available!

Registration is NOW AVAILABLE for the 2021-2022 S&C session that will begin June 14th. Registration will cover the athlete through the summer and all of next school year.

About S&C:
Strength and Conditioning is a year-round program designed to support Oriole athletes both in and off-season. This program is a complement to an athlete’s sport skill training and specifically targets growth in the areas of strength, speed, agility, mobility and injury prevention. The program is carefully coached to keep all athletes safe while they work toward achieving their athletic goals.
This researched based approach will prepare athletes for sport in the safest way possible while under the supervision of coaches and in consultation with athletic training staff. Workloads will be carefully monitored and progressed appropriately for all athletes.

11: P-EBT Benefits are still available

P-EBT Benefits are still available to Families who have students in grades K-12, if they complete the Application for Educational Benefits form. We are processing the applications until June 30th, 2021.
Please keep in mind the P-EBT Benefits are only for the School year 2020/2021, and benefits may retro back to September 2020, as long as they were in Distance Learning and in Hybrid. The Benefit levels for students may be reduced according to the School learning model, such as In Person.

12: Booster does of meningococcal vaccine for 11th & 12th Grade
|
|
Minnesota law requires that all students get vaccinated against certain diseases or have a legal exemption on file to enroll in school. Students entering 12th grade for the 2021-2022 school year need to have documentation, or a legal exemption, for the booster dose of meningococcal vaccine. Most children received the initial dose of this vaccine when they entered 7th grade.
Teenagers and young adults are at higher risk for meningococcal disease. This booster dose is important to make sure they are fully protected through their highest-risk years. Anyone can get meningococcal disease, but college freshmen living in dorms are at increased risk and should get vaccinated. If your 12th grader has not gotten the booster and they are going off to college, please get them scheduled for it.
A person with meningococcal disease may become seriously ill very quickly. Antibiotics can treat meningococcal infections, but often can’t be given soon enough to help. If you plan to seek legal exemption for this booster, please do so before the start of the school year, as documentation needs to be submitted to the health office. If you need exemption information, the immunization form is available on the MDH website (www.health.state.mn.us/people/immunize/basics/imzform.pdf).
Should you have concerns about costs, ask your child’s healthcare provider about low-cost vaccinations or contact Central Clinic at 952-993-1100.
