PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Welcome Back!

It is Quarter 4 and spring has finally arrived. As the weather gets warmer, we’d like to remind students and families of some of our SLPHS expectations to end the school year successfully. Throughout the week our teachers will be reviewing both classroom and school-wide expectations and agreements.

Take care, Be well, and GO PARK!

MOTIVATIONAL ALUMNUS VISITS BEAT MAKING

On Thursday, March 30th, the Digital Beat Making class got to hear a motivational talk from an alumnus from Park. Mr. Schmitz and him have known each other a long time and he has spoken to his classes many times. Tyrone Pickett was involved in athletics and music when he attended SLPHS. Mr. Pickett said he had to work harder than almost anyone around him for similar results and shared that he came from a very tough neighborhood. He had to cook for the whole family and help raise his little brother, even going so far as taking him to classes with him. He spoke about inviting only positivity into his life, his social media feeds, and his friendship circles. Even his family questioned if he would succeed. Some of the students had similar backgrounds and could relate to someone that had similar lived experiences.

After a career-ending ACL injury ended his football dreams, he graduated culinary school, and now is an inspirational speaker. Tyrone now has extremely popular videos on social media, has an online merchandise store, and is invited to speak all over Minnesota, soon expanding to other states and countries. He spoke about never giving up, setting time-sensitive goals with steps, being OK with loved ones not understanding your goals, bringing out the “beast inside each of us”, and reaching for the stars with your goals. He can be reached on all social media platforms by searching “Beast Nation Inspires”.

PARK PRIDE & RESTORATIVE

What is Park Pride (PBIS)?

PARK PRIDE is a framework for schools, teachers, and staff to use in order to create a positive, culturally-inclusive environment that supports academic and social success for all students. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports.

Teaching Expectations in the PBIS Framework

Park PRIDE maintains and sustains the school community by teaching and reteaching expectations and agreements. This approach relies on the continuous relationship development throughout the school year and empowers students and staff to co-create a positive culture and climate.

Starting the Year: Teacher will teach explicit lessons around school-wide

expectations during opening week. Teachers will spend at least 3 days teaching, modeling and practicing their classroom rituals and routines. Classroom expectations and agreements should be co-created with students explicitly revisited, revised and re-taught throughout the school year as needed.

Classroom Routines/Rituals: Teachers are responsible for teaching classroom rituals and routines opening week, but also throughout the school year as needed. These routines might include entering and exiting the room, classroom structure, turning in assignments, transitions, etc.

Refresher Lessons: After breaks (MEA, Winter break, Spring Break, etc.), teachers will teach refresher lessons around areas of concern.

Best practice states that continuous teaching of expectations, agreements, rituals and routines allow for maximization of instructional time during the school year.

As a part of Park PRIDE students will be reviewing expectations and agreements alongside our instructional staff.  Please review the student and family handbook provided below.

FRIENDLY REMINDERS AS WE KICK-OFF QUARTER 4

Attendance

Attendance Matters: Attendance is one of the first indicators of academic success. Research shows that class attendance is closely related to positive performance in coursework. Students are expected to be in class every hour, on time, every school day. Students must remain in the class for the entire hour or they will be marked absent unexcused. Arriving late by more than 10 minutes is considered a partial absence, and is counted as an unexcused absence.

Door Safety & Security

Between the hours of 8:30 am and 3:15 pm students are expected to enter and exit using Door 1 ONLY. This allows us to maintain building safety and security. Any student choosing to use other entrances will meet with a member of the administrative team for further intervention.

Hall Passes

Students are expected to use the bathroom and go to their lockers between classes. Hall passes will not be issued the first and last 10 minutes of class and students are not permitted to leave class unless it is an emergency, with which the teacher may refuse to

give a pass or call for an ASC to walk students to the location. Classroom teachers will receive a permanent pass for the purpose of bathroom and/or locker access. One student will be permitted to go to the bathroom or locker at any given time. Any student in the hall without a hallway pass may lose pass privileges. Certain conditions may warrant a medical waiver to this policy. Students must have their ID readily available when using a pass. Students that are in the hallway with a pass should expect to show their pass to any staff person as requested (this includes students with a permanent pass). When a student arrives at their assigned space, the staff person will collect the hallway pass. Students must have their ID readily available when using a pass.

Closed Campus Grades 9-11 & Open Lunch (Seniors Only)

The safety and security of our school community is of utmost importance. To ensure increased safety and security measures, St. Louis Park High School will remain a closed campus for ALL students grades 9-11. Students will be expected to show this pass upon exiting and entering the building using DOOR 1 only.

*Seniors must have a lunch release signed by a parent/guardian on file to leave campus for lunch. Seniors must return on time to period 6 or they are at risk of losing lunch release privileges.

Food

No food or beverage in the hallways, classrooms or common areas.

Food and/or beverages are not to be taken out of the cafeteria during any lunch period. Students will only eat in the cafeteria, auditorium foyer, or outside when weather permits. Once you enter the lunch space, food is not permitted to leave the mentioned areas. Students are also expected to maintain all lunch spaces by cleaning after themselves in an effort to keep our grounds and cafeteria clean.

Governor Walz signed the Free School Meals for Kids bill on Friday, March 17. The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) will implement this program for Minnesota students beginning the 2023-2024 school year for students in Minnesota.
