Happy New Year SLPHS Students & Families!

I hope you had a wonderful break. The new year brings fresh starts and new beginnings. This week students and staff will engage in our Park PRIDE reteach week. Here, our community will be in relationship with each other as we reestablish school expectations and agreements. Families are asked to partner with SLPHS so we can begin 2022 successfully. We believe that high academic and social expectations are not possible without strong and positive relationships.

Partnering in Holding High Expectations for SLPHS Students
Our mission at SLPHS is to create a safe community where students are able to live in their brilliance both socially and academically. In an effort to create a positive culture and climate where learning thrives and students remain at the center of our community, we are asking families and caregivers to partner in having conversations with your students regarding school expectations and the importance of maximizing their instructional time. 

This includes:
  • Arriving at school on time daily and being in class on-time, every period daily. Students belong in class during instructional time where teaching and learning is taking place.  
  • Interacting with peers appropriately and/or asking for help from our student support team when conflict arises.
  • Responding appropriately to reasonable requests andor redirections from staff with regards to school expectations.
  • Use of school appropriate language that has purpose in an educational setting.
  • Care and respect for our physical space and keeping these spaces clean and damage free.  
  • Coming prepared to learn each and every day.

We know we cannot do this work alone and ask that families reinforce school expectations so we are able to live into the SLP Mission, Vision, and Core Values. We also know the challenges that we face with regards to social-emotional safety and mental health and wellness. Our team of counselors and social workers are available in the event your student needs additional support. Students will be offered tiered-interventions from our student support team of administrators & ASCs when necessary.

Masking
This is a friendly reminder that all students, staff and community members are expected to be masked as determined by SLP School Board policy when inside district buildings and on buses except when eating in designated lunch areas. As a reminder, your mask must cover your nose, mouth and chin. Please help us keep our community safe against COVID 19.
Students Staying After School
Students are only allowed to stay after school if they are participating in an organized school activity. Students are expected to exit the building at 3:30 pm or immediately after their organized school activity has concluded. Students will be asked to exit the building after 3:30 pm if they have not reported to a supervised activity. 
Food Outside of Cafeteria & Other Designated Areas
This is a reminder that students should not be bringing food and drink outside of the cafeteria and/or designated areas. This includes walking through hallways with food and/or drink. Students are expected to dispose of garbage in the appropriate garbage receptacles. Students will be asked to dispose of their food/drink before entering the classroom.  

In addition, it is expected that students clean up after themselves by throwing their garbage into garbage cans at lunch. Seniors that leave school for lunch should throw their food garbage in an appropriate garbage receptacle before returning to the building. Under NO circumstances should food be disposed of in the school parking lot or on school grounds. Please do your part in keeping our school clean and respecting our campus grounds.
SLPHS Pass Policy
Students are expected to be in class during instructional time. 
Students that are in the hallway during instructional time are required to have a pass issued from their teacher with a clear purpose describing why they are missing instructional time.  

Students are encouraged to use the restroom during passing time. Teachers will only allow one student to use the bathroom at a time and students should have a pass.

Students are expected to be in the classroom space during instructional time unless supervised by their teacher or other staff person.
Students without a pass will be asked to present one. Students without a pass will be asked or escorted to return to their class.
Excused Absences & Tardies During Assigned Class Time
Students that are assigned to a course and/or study hall are expected to report on time and remain for the entire period. Students that come to class significantly late to class, skip class, or leave before the period without permission will be marked absent unexcused. Attendance will not be changed unless there is a lawful excused absence (please reference the student handbook).  
 
NOTE: Students that have an open hour must exit the building and leave campus. Students that are assigned PSEO or similar programming are asked to report to their assigned area of the building.
Chromebooks
Students, please make sure you are bringing your fully charged Chromebook to school each day for instructional purposes.
Student Vaccination Status
Some SLPHS students and families have received communication regarding their student’s vaccination status. Students may not attend school until their vaccination status is up to date or until they have a notarized exemption letter beginning January 3rd. Families will be contacted January 3rd to pick up their student until vaccination status is up to date. 
SLPHS Theatre Presents
These Shining Lives January 14-16 
 
Set in the 1920s, Melanie Marnich’s These Shining Lives chronicles the strength and determination of women considered expendable in their day, exploring the true story of women poisoned by their work at the Radium Dial Company. In the face of tragedy, these women discover the depth of enduring friendship and the courage to fight for justice against the company that knowingly put their lives at risk.
 
Performances of These Shining Lives are January 14 and 15 at 7:00 pm and January 16 at 2:00 pm. All performances will be held in the High School auditorium, located along the West 33rd Street entrance. Tickets: free with SLPHS student ID, $5 for all other students and senior citizens, and $7 for adults. Purchase advance tickets online at https://slphstheseshininglives.eventbrite.com or at the box office 30 minutes prior to the performance. Please note, masks are required inside the building.
New Sections of Driver's Education Added
NEW sections of Driver’s Education with Safeway Driving School Added

The State of Minnesota has extended the ability for Driver’s Education to be performed remotely through June 2022. With this extension, Safeway Driving School will be offering two Distance Learning courses open to St. Louis Park students in February and April. Dates, prices, and registration link below. 

Distance Learning Driver’s Education (via Zoom) 

*The State of Minnesota requires the courses to be conducted in a face-to-face platform which requires students to have a video camera and audio capabilities on their devices. Safeway will email the classroom handouts and MN Driver’s Manual in pdf format for printing. Students will be required to be in front of the camera and interactive for the full three hour class.
