Please join me in congratulating four of the top 9th and 10th grade band students at SLPHS who were selected for the CMBDA (Central Minnesota Band Director’s Association) 9/10 Honor Band. They were joined by their counterparts from across Central Minnesota for a full day of music. They learned the music mostly on their own before the event, and then had 6-7 hours of rehearsal at Elk River HS. They worked in smaller sectionals and in full band rehearsal to put together a concert in hours rather than the usual months. The guest conductor this year was Dr. Heidi Miller of Gustavus Adolphus College. The challenging repertoire included several selections from underrepresented (female, BIPOC) composers. The honor band  performed a concert at 5pm for parents,  family,  friends, community members, and their music teachers. Ms. Alison Recommends… Heartless by Marissa Meyer. How did the Queen of Hearts become the Queen of Hearts in Wonderland? This book weaves the story of Alice in Wonderland in perfectly with adventure, romance, and humor. Very entertaining from beginning to end.

Students are expected to attend school everyday during finals week. Tuesday and Wednesday will be extended periods for classes which need extended time for testing.

Thursday is designed for students to have a last chance to get work done, take tests if they were absent on Tuesday/Wednesday (learning lab will be available for make-up test taking by appointment - more details to come), and to have sometime of Joy at the end of semester 1 (we do not spend enough time celebrating success or achievements). All students are expected to attend school.

The following is a message from the Counselors regarding your Semester 2 class schedule:

Semester 2 schedules are available in Powerschool (desktop version – not in Schoology). Please review as this is the most accurate version of student schedules.

The Schedule Change Request Form (online google form) will be available starting Jan. 16th for students to request a schedule change.  Counselors will continually review the requests and be in touch with students via email regarding any changes.  The google form link will be posted on the Powerschool Login page as well as on the Counselors Schoology pages.

Schedule changes will be made for the following reason:

1. A wrong course appears
2. A course has been failed
3. A class is missing
4. There is a class conflict.   

Please be advised there are no changes for teacher or time of day preference for classes.

Classes are still being balanced through Monday, January 30th, the first day of Semester 2, thus there still may be some changes to student schedules.  

All students should access Powerschool to see their updated schedule on Monday, Jan. 30th to start the second semester.

Reminder to all students driving to school you must have your parking pass clearly displayed in your vehicle to park in the student parking lot. Students - you must park in students designated spots only or you may be towed.

The small lot near door 1 is for visitor and staff parking only.

The Orioles’ Nest after school program will be closed the following dates: 1/26, 1/31, 2/1 and 2/2. Please ensure your students are able to get home at 3:15pm. The Nest will resume on 2/7.

High School Neuroscience Summer Program  

for Students Underrepresented in Science and Medicine

July 10-14, 2023

Free for ten students who are selected for the summer program!

Students will receive a $400 stipend!

Meals and travel expenses will be covered for the whole week!

SLP High School is offering an official administration of the ACT to all 11th grade students on Wednesday, March 8th 2023. The exam is free and no registration is necessary.

On March 8th, all 11th graders will be in school taking the exam. Students in grades 9, 10, and 12 will be asynchronous. Assignments will be placed in Schoology and students are expected to work from home. There will be optional in-person Orioles' Nest available for students in 9th, 10th, or 12th grade. Students will sign up for Orioles' Nest from the student support app and transportation will be provided. Orioles' Nest support hours will run similar to the ACT testing time of 8:25-12:30.

The ACT measures knowledge and skills in English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning. 

• The district administered test will be online via TestNav and does NOT include the writing option. If you want to take the ACT with writing you will need to visit the  ACT site to register.
• The test begins at the start of the 1st hour - 8:25 am and will conclude by 12:30 pm for standard test takers.
• Students with test accommodations may receive extended test time. Details will be provided prior to testing.
• Transportation will be provided. Please check in next week’s 6425 for more information.
• Bag lunches will be available for students at their request (sign-up will be provided in your Park Connection classroom soon).
• Free test prep is available on the ACT webpage.  We encourage students to start preparing NOW!

We all recognize the challenges that vaping holds for our students. There are serious health risks in their young developing bodies and brains. In addition, it can have impact on their academic performance and school engagement.

We have recently received a grant specifically to address vaping from the Minnesota Department of Health through Hennepin County. The goal of the grant is to strengthen the implementation of the comprehensive approach to youth vaping prevention in secondary schools. In doing so, this will result in decreased youth vaping, increased perception of vaping harm, reduced school violations and decreased staff time and energy needed to address substance use.

We are in the information seeking phase with various stakeholders. We want to gather parent/caregiver feedback and perspective. Please take 5 minutes to complete this anonymous vaping survey.

They’re back: Free virtual financial aid events for Minnesota students and families! 

The series, running February 7 through 28, will cover general financial aid information, details on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the Minnesota Dream Act for undocumented students, and other ways to pay for college. A fact sheet for schools is attached.

• All sessions will have simultaneous interpretation in Spanish, Somali and Hmong. Information for families about registering for the series is available here.
• Students who attend a session or watch one of the recordings will be eligible to win a $500 scholarship!
• These sessions are a collaborative effort between the Minnesota Office of Higher Education, Minnesota Department of Education, ECMC The College Place and Minnesota Goes to College.

We’re Improving Weather-Related Notifications.

St. Louis Park Public Schools is making sure families receive weather-related announcements in a more timely manner with these improvements:

• Weather-related announcements will be prioritized in our notification system, which will significantly speed up the time it takes for families to receive calls.

• Our system will now call up to two contact numbers listed for each student. Previously the default was to only contact one unless otherwise designated. 

• We now have a solution in place to mitigate the issue of SLP emails going to spam.

• Families can now receive communications in their preferred language, such as Somali and Spanish. If we are unable to record a multilingual call, the family receives the phone message in English and the email in the preferred language.

• In addition to local news outlets airing school closings/delays, we are expanding our media partners to include KMNV La Raza Radio and other language-specific news agencies. 

In the coming months, we will begin the process of enabling text message notifications.

Want to receive District emails and phone recordings in Spanish or Somali?

Families can now receive district-level communications (emails and phone recordings) in a preferred language such as Spanish or Somali. If you wish to update your language preferences, please contact our front office staff and ask that the preferred guardian language be updated in the student information system (PowerSchool). This will ensure you receive district-level communications such as closures and emergencies in your preferred messages. Whenever possible, we will do our best to ensure SLP phone recordings go out in your preferred language.
