1: From the Interim Principal
|
|
Greetings SLP Families,
Happy Valentine’s Day on Sunday, the 14th of February. On Monday, Feb. 15th, there is no school as we recognize President’s Day. Another exciting day in February is the 22nd as that is the day we finally get to bring at least some of our students back in our 50% hybrid safe learning plan.
Please note that on Tuesday of next week, we will have a straight 7 period day, so all classes will run on that day, including Park Connections. Teachers will build breaks into their class sessions. Wednesday remains the same and the Oriole’s Study Nest and Learning Lab will be open.
There is no school on Thursday the 18th or Friday the19th for students, as all our teachers will be planning for the transition to hybrid, which requires them to teach both students in their classrooms and online at the same time. In our efforts to ensure students are able to hear and understand their teachers, we have purchased several inexpensive over-the-ear microphones for teachers, and they are practicing with these mics to prepare for hybrid instruction. Once students return, all staff members will be wearing both masks and shields to ensure safety. Students are only required to wear masks. In addition, as always, everyone in the school is expected to maintain social distancing and wash hands regularly.
Please look carefully at the chart below to see when your student is scheduled to return. As you know, we are bringing our seniors and freshmen back first, followed by our juniors and sophomores on March 8.

Thank you so much for your ongoing support as we make preparations for returning staff and students safely to this beautiful building. We are currently balancing numbers between cohorts A and B to ensure necessary spacing in all classrooms and the cafeteria.

2: Success In the Oriole's Nest This Week
|
|
Damarcus Diamond, pictured with GLC, Trent Davis, is our featured student having Success in the Nest this week. He comes every single day to do his school work up in the Learning Lab, as part of our Oriole's Nest study program. He said he loves the Learning Lab because it is a smaller space, it's peaceful, and you can talk easily with the GLC's to get help. There are also smaller rooms for individuals if you really want some private space to talk openly with your teacher online. Trent Davis, GLC, told me that Damarcus is a phenomenal debater with lots of ideas and meaningful input on topics of interest. Demaracus also said he eats lunch here and the food is "decent."
Demarcus has learned how to advocate for himself. During classes, he will let his teachers know if he would like more explanation or help with some topics, and he regularly meets with Ms. Webster, Ms. Sigel, and Ms. Ortman in their classrooms. Sometimes he simply sends them an email and they email him back with the times he can meet them in their classrooms.
Please know that all students are welcome and invited to get the help they need, in person or online. As our school begins Hybrid learning on Feb. 22, we will continue to have our Oriole's Nest Study Hall and Learning Lab open each Wednesday. How to Get Assistance

5: High School Principal Search Update

St. Louis Park Public Schools is seeking a principal to lead the high school beginning July 1, 2021. The position is posted and potential candidates are invited to visit the school district website at www.slpschools.org/HR to apply. The posting closes February 24.

March 10: First Round Interviews
March 17: Second Round Interviews
March 22-25: Final Round Interviews
April 12: Candidate Recommendation to the School Board
Stakeholder Team Sign Up
If you are interested in joining a stakeholder team and participating in the interview process, please complete the following form.
The stakeholder team will provide feedback to the superintendent based on principal candidate qualifications. The superintendent will take into consideration the feedback from the stakeholder teams. The final selection decision will consider information collected throughout the full selection process and will be made by the superintendent.

6: International Baccalaureate Information for Class of 2023
|
|
Your sophomore year is an especially exciting year for registration as you will have many IB classes you may choose to enroll in, AND you may elect to be an IB Diploma Candidate!
Any student may choose to register for any IB course that interests them. Most IB courses fulfil specific graduation requirements, and a few fulfil general elective credit requirements. Many of the IB courses are a full two years in length (like the IB English 11/12 options), so it may be important to really decide which one you want to begin as a Junior (as it will continue).

To earn the IB Diploma (an internationally recognized diploma that SLP students may earn in addition to their SLP diploma), students must successfully complete a more specific set of classes. If you are thinking you may want to be an IB Diploma Candidate (not just a student taking some IB courses here and there), then please do the following:

7: No IB Exams this MAY 2021
|
|
From the IBO:
Based on the information your school provided and in line with local or national health and safety restrictions you are considered unable to administer examinations, therefore your students’ results will be awarded using coursework marks and predicted grades for the May 2021 examination session.
FAQs:
Will I still earn an IB awarded grade?
Yes! The great things about IB courses is that the grades have always been awarded based on more than just an end of year exam. Therefore you will still have that coursework to earn an IB moderated grade.
Will colleges still give me credit for my IB class?
Yes! IB has been working with institutions from around the world to make certain they understand that students are still doing the work, even without a test, and they will be assessed in a systematic way. Colleges and Universities have been supportive of this and have indicated that they will continue practices of awarding credit in a similar manner.
Will I get my money back?
No. Since your internal assessment work will still be graded by the IBO, your fees still go toward those grading practitioners. Remember, you are still getting an IB grade, and will be able to earn college credit based on your results.
Will our deadlines for internal assessments change?
No. The deadlines for internal assessment submissions remain the same.

- Congratulations to Isaiah Klepfer, a 10th grade saxophonist, who was accepted to the 9/10 All State Jazz Band! They will perform virtually with the top young jazz players in Minnesota in a few months.
- Dr. Peter Haberman, of Concordia College in Moorhead, brought five of his music major students to each band class this week. Dr. Haberman motivated and inspired us during this difficult time to try to learn and perform music. He also taught us about the many opportunities in music after high school. His students also taught us how professionals practice. Park students were engaged and enjoyed the clinics.

February is a great month to get creative! Practicing mindfulness is a wonderful, easy way to bring awareness to the present moment and acknowledge the thoughts, feelings and sensations that arise. It helps to identify feelings and makes room for healing. A fun way to practice mindfulness is through creativity. 16: Class of 2021- Dollars for Scholars Local Scholarships
|
|
All seniors are eligible to apply for local scholarships. If you attended the Feb.10th Senior Meeting, Ms. Nelson explained the application process. There are many different scholarships with various criteria available to the Class of 2021.

19: Notice of Exclusion for Immunization Non-Compliance
|
|
St. Louis Park Public Schools requires compliance with the Minnesota State Immunization Law (M.S. 121A.15). In anticipation of high school students returning to in-person learning, your student must be up-to-date on immunizations, or provide the appropriate legal exemption form. Your student will not be able to attend school in-person until the appropriate documentation is provided.
