Greetings!
The countdown to winter break begins. For me, this is a magical time of year that is spent with family, loved ones, and friends. I can’t help but include our SLPHS commUNITY. Although the days are shorter and we are surrounded by darkness, I can’t help but think about the celebrations of light that focus on love and light to bring our commUNITY together inside and outside of the classroom. Some celebrate with gift giving and to me the real gift is the time spent in relationship with all of you. I wish you a safe, relaxing, and restful winter break. May your New Year be fruitful and filled with peace and love.

STUDENT BOXER REPRESENTS MN IN NATIONAL COMPETITION | |
SLPHS would like to congratulate 9th grade student Guinevere Lee who competed in the US Boxing National's Tournament last week in Lubbock, TX. She represented the state of Minnesota in this competition and is a nationally ranked boxer. | |
HS STUDENTS SELF-CARE LESSON AT SLPMS | |
High school seniors Najma Abdimalik, Sara Taye, and Amira Cosey (not pictured) visited the middle school to teach a lesson on self care last week. For an assignment through NTA or the high school Non-traditional Academy, they were asked to prepare a learning experience on a topic they wish they had been taught. They led a few sections of 8th grade students through a “would you rather” activity (ex. would you rather relax by reading a book or watching a movie) and some facts on the benefits of self-care. They guided students through some long and short term goal setting, and had everyone commit to one act of self care for that day. Their leadership focus on mental health was well received by students and very engaging! | |
STOCK MARKET GAME WINNERS | |
Congratulations to this year's Personal Finance Stock Market Game winners! These students used their stock market literacy skills learned in class to compete with over 1000 other teams in the metro area in growing their fictitious online portfolios that follow real stock market data. Special congratulations to Landyn Tasto, Nate Benishek and Aaron Bilden who finished in 11th place - that’s the top 1% of the game. | |

This is a friendly reminder that all students are expected to leave campus at 3:15 pm unless they are a part of an organized activity with an adult supervisor. Students are not permitted to hang out after school to wait for after school events such as athletics and will be asked to leave campus.

During Inclusive Schools Week, it is important to commemorate the progress that schools have made in providing a quality education to an increasingly diverse student population including students who are marginalized due to disability, gender, socio-economics status, cultural heritage language preference and other factors. Inclusive Schools Week also provides an important opportunity for educators, students and parents to discuss what else could be done to ensure that their schools continue to improve their ability to successfully educate all children.
This year, the Inclusive Schools Week’s theme is “Unity within Community—Inclusion Around the World.” United we are stronger to focus on our common need—inclusive practices in our schools and in our communities.
Let us stand together to address the challenges of this time as we continue to address the needs of our children for schools where all children belong, thrive, and are supported by their teachers, peers, family members and neighbors. Let’s learn more about the work of other organizations and groups in our community and share ideas, resources and support. Let’s teach our children by our actions how to treat others, how to communicate and build relationships, and how to work in harmony to address our common needs. None of us are alone in our efforts to support inclusive practices. Working together we stand stronger as we move closer to that vision of an inclusive world in 2022!

Just a friendly reminder to all 2023 seniors. Please order your cap and gown, see important steps below, and order by deadline 12/15/22.
- Gown Size - determined by height & weight (feet & inches; pounds) Height determines length. Weight determines the fullness of the gown. Submitting accurate information will ensure a proper fit.
Orders submitted after the deadline will not have sizing guaranteed!

We are looking for donations of gift cards to send home with families over winter break. Any gift cards from the following grocery stores are greatly appreciated: Target, ALDI, and Cub. These can be dropped off in the main office any school day 7:30am-3:30pm.
Do You or Your Family Need Food?
The Bird Feeder is a food shelf operated by students for students. We pack bags of food on Mondays and Thursdays and are available for pick up by 12:55pm (after 5th period) in the Main Office. Food pick-up is only valid for 24 hours.
Special bags for WINTER BREAK are available by request via our Google Form

WHY DO SO MANY SLP STUDENTS OPT OUT OF TESTING? | |
|
St. Louis Park Public Schools has a significantly higher opt-out rate than our neighboring school districts. We want to help staff, families, and students understand how these tests can benefit students and schools and how opting out can actually have unintended negative impacts.
The state uses proficiency data to help identify which schools need additional support and recognize those making fantastic progress. But when students opt out of testing, they are marked as “not proficient” by the state, significantly lowering apparent proficiency levels. It impacts everything from students’ college-ready scores and understanding of academic progress to school enrollment and perception.
It’s not that SLP students aren’t proficient, it’s that many are not testing. Movements across the country have encouraged families to opt out without understanding the impact it has on students and schools. Some movements, for example, are based on the premise that standardized tests are racially biased against Students of Color. Read more.
