1: From the Interim Principal
|

Hello SLP Families,
Governor Walz announced today that he was reducing Covid restrictions in Minnesota. He stated, “Outdoor venues may operate at 100% capacity as allowed for their property, as permitted by code, local ordinances, etc.” This is such amazing news! Our goal is to safely allow for as many guests as possible to attend our graduation ceremony on Tuesday, June 8th at 7:00 p.m. to celebrate the amazing Class of 2021. We are required to submit a plan to MDE for approval, but we are hoping for approval to allow up to 8 tickets per graduate. Non-ticketed guests may stand outside the fence or watch the Live Stream of the event, but safety must continue to be a priority. Masks will be required. Final details will be shared as we learn more details.
Don’t forget to tune in to our Virtual Senior Awards Event at 7:00 p.m. on May 19th on YouTube. Every senior will be recognized and celebrated, and their pictures, special awards, memories and future plans will be included. Shelley Nielsen, retiring principal, is our featured speaker.
We are continuing with our modified grading options second semester, just as we did first semester. Any student wishing to receive a “P” for Pass instead of a letter grade will again have the opportunity to make that request. Students who earn D’s will be given P’s and students who fail will be given “NC” for No Credit. We are doing our best to hold students harmless to grade point averages due to the challenges endured during the pandemic.

This week in the 6425 we proudly acknowledge Joelle Sheffield. Joelle is a senior this year here at SLPHS. Joelle has done great things in her high school career. Joelle took some time to answer a few questions about her experience and what the future looks like for herself.
1. What has helped you with school during the COVID 19 pandemic?
Staff has helped. Ms. Busse, Greg, etc. The N.T.A program and coming to school in person has helped as well.
2. Can you explain your high school experience for us?
My high school experience has taught me how to prioritize what works well for me personally to get things done.
3. What advice would you give underclassmen about school?
Build good relationships with the faculty. Keep good attendance. Don’t rely on credit recovery.
4. What are your plans for after high school?
I am leaving Minnesota and going to college.
We are very proud of Joelle’s accomplishments and hope the best for future journey’s in life!

Ticket sales will be online and will be $10 each. It will go live on Friday! Once to the webpage, please click on Prom 20-21.
Tickets must be purchased by SLP juniors and seniors only on their designated day. They can purchase one or two tickets and their guest ticket can be an SLP current student only.
Attire will be formal, and the theme will be announced soon! Get excited Park students!
Ticket will include music, activities, photos, party favors and a surprise dessert food truck! :)

Prom Donations Needed!
Starting April 23rd donations of string lights will be collected in the main entrance foyer to be used to decorate the SLP ROC for Prom on May 14th and 15th! Please only donate those that you are willing to part with, we will not be able to return them to you! Thank you so much in advance for your support of your students, this school and community. SLP – Bensheim, Germany Virtual Exchange 2021
The pandemic has made travel to Europe nearly impossible. But that didn’t hold us back!
SLP German 5 students have been exchanging virtually with our partner class at the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule in Bensheim, Germany. Recently, we exercised our target language skills (German for us, English for them) by creating a short FlipGrid presentation lockdown survival and hybrid learning. Viewing and discussing the presentations of our German partner class has helped us to learn more about their culture. We have also gained some creative new ideas for ourselves! Another current topic of discussion between the two: Earning, saving, handling and spending money as a teenager.

7: May is Mental Health Awareness Month
|
|
With the ongoing pandemic, support staff are seeing an increase in the mental health needs of students. I recently listened to a podcast that talked about the ‘worried well’ – kids that previously had issues with anxiety are experiencing a greater increase in anxiety due to the pandemic. As adults, we think about this in different terms than adolescents do, and they are finding that the impact on teens is far greater than we realize. Here are a couple resources – the short podcast and an article a teacher recently shared with our whole staff for you to review.

8: Advanced Placement (AP) Exams Information

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) EXAMS
WEEK 1 OF AP EXAMS ARE DONE!
EXAMS RUN THROUGH JUNE 4
Some AP Exams are still being administered in a paper/pencil format. However, this year College Board, the company that runs AP testing, added a digital format for some of the exams. The schedule can be found on the High School web page. https://www.slpschools.org/domain/637
All AP exams given at St. Louis Park High School are intended to be in person exams. This includes the digital exams.
We also strongly recommend students take digital exams on school issued Chromebooks. Students who do not currently have a school issued chromebook can check one out for the exam by signing up for Mrs. LaPray’s office hours. slp.studentsupporttime.com
Students who would like to cancel their exam may do so prior to 11:59pm on May 27 or their exam day whichever comes first. The $70 base fee for the exam will be refunded.* Please go to Total Registration to cancel the exam and receive a refund. https://user.totalregistration.net/student/login.php

16: Covid-19 VS Allergy/Cold/Flu season

COVID-19 vs. Allergies: Do I Need to Quarantine?
STUDENT & FAMILY Information Regarding Allergy/Cold/Flu Season
Some symptoms of general illness such as seasonal allergies, colds, and/or flu overlap with symptoms of COVID-19. If a parent/guardian/family member believes their child/student has any illness - which displays the same symptoms as COVID-19 - the student, and other household members, are not allowed to attend school until:
The symptomatic student tests negative for COVID-19; or
An alternative diagnosis (such as allergies, cold, or flu) is received from the child’s/student’s health care provider in written form and copied to the school health office.
If the student with symptoms does not test for COVID-19, or receive an alternative diagnosis from their health care provider, they would need to isolate at home for 10 days and household members would follow the 14 day quarantine protocol.
