1: From the Interim Principal

Greetings Families and Students,
It was an emotional day for me and for many staff members today because, as you know, we go back to Distance Learning on Monday. While we only had up to 25% of our students here on any given day for the past two weeks, we loved seeing them! I loved meeting at least some of our students, even though we were all masked and socially distanced. I am so very proud of our students, and you should be, too! They adapted to the incredible logistical and safety requirements we put in place, and they didn’t complain one bit.
While visiting many classes, I witnessed the result of the hard work our teachers put in to deliver a complex hybrid model. I was very impressed with the engagement of the students and their willingness to assist if other students or teachers experienced technical glitches. I found our students to be kind, well-mannered and grateful. Many told me they feel welcomed here and are happy with how supported they feel. That made me proud, because, while academics are extremely important, it reminds me of one of my favorite quotes by Maya Angelou, which states, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I want each and every SLPHS student to know and feel how much we care about them!
My mom always reminded me that the only thing constant is change, and she was certainly right! I am sure you are all tired of having to navigate the constant schedule changes we have put out since August, and it is my sincere hope that the information in this 6425 newsletter will provide clear explanations and links regarding this most recent change - back to distance learning. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call or email.

2: Distance Learning Begins at HS Monday
|

INFORMATION FOR DISTANCE LEARNING MODEL
Schedule
Attendance
Students must check into the class link every hour, every day. For asynchronous classes, students must check in for 5-10 minutes for attendance and class update purposes, and remain in the class link if they want help from their teacher. On Wednesdays, Park Connections attendance is especially important as this is the only hour attendance is taken on that day.
Park Connections and Lunch Schedule
Park Connections is from 11:45-12:15 p.m. every day. Starting on Monday, November 16, all students have lunch from 12:15-12:45 p.m. Fifth hour will begin at 12:50 p.m. By returning to Distance Learning, there is no “first,” “second,” or “third,” lunch, which we had in Hybrid.
The Oriole Study Nest: A Student's Home Away from Home
Students may sign up to come into school Monday through Friday. Whether it’s for a change of location, improved internet, one-on-one help, or needing the structure we can provide at school, students need to confirm with a staff member about the time they’re coming in so that we can continue to keep track of who is in the building for safety purposes. If too many students sign up, we will need to stagger attendance, because we will be very strict with safety precautions. Breakfast and lunch will be free for any student who attends.
Students can also sign up for office hours, set up a meeting time, or check teachers’ availability by using the Student Support App. If you follow this link, students can sign up directly for a help session with teachers! There are also opportunities to work with teachers in-person through small groups. This is the same app we used to schedule conferences.
Transportation
Transportation is available Monday through Friday. Transportation can be requested by filling out this form by NOON the school day before you want to come in. Bus stops are not neighborhood stops, but are ‘hub stops’ or central locations like schools or community centers. Families will receive final information about the route by the email submitted in the request.
Other Supports
Many other supports are available as well. Follow this link to see the many options High School Staff have made available for students to get the help, encouragement and support they wish to have in order to be successful! This includes virtual support, tutoring, Learning Lab, Math Tutoring sessions, Mental Health Supports and more. Be sure to open this link!

#parkPRIDE is a School-Wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support system developed in the summer of 2019 and implemented last year. #parkPRIDE stands for Purpose, Relationships, Inclusiveness, Dependability and Excellence. #parkPRIDE creates a shared culture that is unique to St. Louis Park and encourages the development of communication and social skills. #parkPRIDE aligns with BARR’s strategy to focus on the whole student and foster a climate for learning. At the beginning of the year, staff created this PRIDE matrix for distance learning. Next week in advisory, students will be adding to and/or revising this matrix as we recommit to distance learning as a school.

New York Times photojournalism finalist
Out of more than 1,000 submissions from students across the world to the annual School of The New York Times photojournalism challenge, senior Talia Lissauer was chosen as one of 10 finalists. The contest aimed to document students' time in quarantine. James Estrin, a Pulitzer Prize winning, senior staff photographer, selected the 10 finalists and two winners. The two winners were featured in the nationwide print edition of The New York Times Nov. 5.

5: Students Granted National Membership

|
A huge thanks to the Jennissen Vos Family Fund for removing barriers by covering the membership fees for DECA the class members to join DECA the Club. All (30) DECA the Class students join over 220,000 other high school members to prepare for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, management and entrepreneurship.

7: Meal Pick Up Schedule for Next Week

Meal pick up bags will be available outside the High School main entrance Monday and Wednesday next week 11:45am-12:45pm.

The new PSAT test date will be January 26, 2021. Students who registered for the PSAT are enrolled for the January exam.
Students who have not registered can still register
Registrations are on a “while supplies last” basis and cost $30.00.
Students who qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch can request a fee waiver when registering.
Students who would like to take the PSAT, but for whom the cost is prohibitive should contact their Counselor or the Testing Coordinator about Grants** to cover the fee
*The PSAT is to qualify students for National Merit Scholarships when taken during 11th grade. Students who are in the top third of their class and/or have over a 3.0 GPA are encouraged to take the test. Tenth graders who are in the top 25% of their class should consider taking the test as well as a practice for 11th grade. The PSAT can also be used as a practice test for the SAT.
**Grants do not have to be repaid

9: Central Clinic Information
|

Central Clinic is now open. For general Central Clinic information, Click Here
- Will be open every Wednesday afternoon from 1-4:30pm
- Will only see patients for vaccine visits
- Will not be administering COVID testing at Central
- Will not be administering immunizations for patients who are positive for COVID symptoms
- Patients can continue to schedule phone visits for other medical needs as appropriate
- All patients and visitors must wear a mask
- Students are only allowed one adult guardian into their visit. Other visitors should remain outside the clinic
- All persons will be screened upon arrival to the lobby, or at check-in
- Social distancing guidelines will be posted and the lobby arranged to support this effort
- When appropriate, the patient can be scheduled for a virtual phone visit

St. Paul Testing Site Will Offer Free Saliva COVID Tests to Anyone Who Needs It
The Minnesota Department of Health is offering Minnesotans more and different options for COVID=19 testing by offering saliva testing in a growing number of locations across the state. The test is more comfortable than a nasal swab, and available at no cost to anyone who believes they need a COVID-19 test. Click here for more information.

11: Seniors - Order Your Cap & Gown Now
|

Please go to gradsmn.org to order your cap and gown now. There is no charge to families. We order our cap and gowns from Jostens and due to the situation with the pandemic, they need to have this information as soon as possible. 12: Change to Chill Hennepin County
|
|
SECONDARY STUDENTS AND CAREGIVERS: Change to Chill
Allina Health’s teen mental well-being initiative, Change to Chill, will offer free virtual sessions to Hennepin County secondary students and parents. The 60-minute sessions will cover general topics like identifying stressors, coping with change, grief and anxiety, as well as how to start mental health conversations. Sessions for youth and parents who have been most impacted by COVID-19 and the civil unrest are planned. These sessions will be led by culturally competent community consultants and mental health providers. Sessions run from November through December and registration is required. The first session on November 9th at 7 pm is for school educators and community partners to learn about Change to Chill and this project.
