Happy Friday Park Community,
Yesterday, my administrative team and I had the privilege of meeting with Lt. Governor, Peggy Flannagan, and Rep. Cheryl Youakim. They were here to work alongside our incredible Nutrition staff and help pack meals that were delivered to hundreds of our students during distance learning. We had the opportunity to share our current distance learning plan with them and explain the importance of our daily Park Connections program, which ensures each student has a daily connection with at least one caring adult.
As we continue to refine our practice in this new learning model, we appreciate feedback from students and parents. We have received a great deal of positive feedback regarding the schedule we have created, and I thank you for that. I also receive feedback from both ends of the spectrum - some parents want more direct instructional time each day, and some parents want us to make sure we don't creep synchronous instruction into asynchronous periods. Please keep your feedback coming so we can continue to adapt to the learning needs of our students.
This describes the need for differentiated instruction. All students learn differently. They have different strengths and varying interests. Some are auditory learners; some are visual learners; some prefer hands-on activities and more movement. Some kids love group work and some prefer to work alone. Some love to get an assignment and go with it independently while others need guided, incremental support along the way. Some love computers and others struggle to navigate the many tools and apps currently being introduced. Whatever your child's learning needs, we ask you to encourage your student to advocate for themselves and talk directly with their teachers to let them know what they need in order to be successful.
We are listening. We are all learning, and we value partnering with you!

This year, 2021 seniors will be able to submit their own portrait free of charge. Seniors MUST submit their chosen portrait through the Google Form provided on the Echowan website, under the senior pictures tab, ensuring that it meets all requirements.
Portraits can be professionally taken through a senior shoot, or you can use any photo you like! We also have many Echowan photographers on staff that would be more than happy to take senior pictures for free. Please contact us through email at echowan2021@gmail.com if you would like to choose this option and we will set you up with one of our photographers.
ALL SENIOR PICTURES MUST BE SUBMITTED THROUGH THE FORM BY OCTOBER 21ST!

PowerSchool for Parents/Guardians
Access to your Powerschool public portal account will give you the ability to update important contact information, access your student's meal account and make payments online, view your student's most current bus stop information, register your student for athletics and pay for student athletic fees. Instructions about how to set up your PowerSchool account are available at www.slpschools.org. You can go directly to the PowerSchool Public Portal at www.slpschools.powerschool.com to begin the registration process. If you need assistance contact Deb Muralt at muralt.debra@slpschools.org.

PSAT Registration Opens September 25 |

Test Venue at the High School yet to be determined

*The PSAT is to qualify students for National Merit Scholarships when taken during 11th grade. Students who are in the top third of their class and/or have over a 3.0 GPA are encouraged to take the test. Tenth graders who are in the top 25% of their class should consider taking the test as well as a practice for 11th grade. The PSAT can also be used as a practice test for the SAT. Read More

Fall MAP (NWEA) Testing for 9th & 10th Graders in October |

The MAP(NWEA) Reading and Math tests will be given to Freshmen and Sophomores remotely on Wednesdays during October beginning at 9:00am. Teachers administering the exams will contact students prior to exam day with login and testing details.

Exam Registration must be completed through myap.collegeboard.org no later than September 30, 2020. Students have received join codes from their teachers and should have already completed this task.

Notes From The Attendance Line (952-928-6045)
2020 is teaching us to work with what we have to solve new problems. This is the same with tracking student attendance during Distance Learning. You may notice two new codes pop up in PowerSchool: "P" and "NA."
While "P" is labeled "Alternative Placement," we are using it differently right now to help track when technology issues disrupt learning. So if the internet goes out or your student encounters other issues, please call the Attendance line (952-928-6045) to report this. Your student should also always notify their teacher as well.
Another new code is "NA," labeled "Abs. Time/Work Completed." This code is used for students who are not able to attend class at the scheduled time, such as PSEO enrollment, but are still getting work done.
As always, families are encouraged to have a PowerSchool account to keep updated on grades and attendance. If you need help with PowerSchool please contact Deb Muralt at muralt.debra@slpschools.org.

PEAC meetings are with the principals and various timely guests to learn the latest about what's going on at the high school, share insights and connect with other parents to help support students. This group also supports teacher appreciation and conference meals.

Free Meals for Kids During Distance Learning |
|
While the District is in a distance learning educational delivery model, students and families will be able to pick up FREE MEALS (breakfast and lunch) at any of the six schools on Mondays and Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. In accordance with USDA guidelines, you must be a parent or guardian of a child (birth to 18) in the District in order to pick up these grab-and-go bag meals.
