1: From the Interim Principal

Greetings SLP Parents and Students,
We all continue to experience both positives and negatives as this pandemic continues. One advantage of being in distance learning this winter is that no matter what the weather is, teaching and learning is able to continue without disruptions or cancellations.
Technology has allowed us to continue with teaching and learning, and while most of it is positive, a negative side exists, if misused. Long hours on screens is not ideal, and as reported earlier this year, we had some Zoom bombing. This week, we experienced another negative side of social media--online harassment, specifically aimed at our freshman girls.
After countless hours of investigation and with great help from students and community members, we were finally able to get the site taken down by Instagram. Today, we provided support and discussion groups for students wishing for time to process this, and a letter was sent to all freshman parents. Our students’ wellbeing will always be our highest priority.
Lastly, I wanted you to know that we are engaging in conversations around the pro’s and con’s of a block schedule at the high school. I have heard from many students and parents regarding the possibility. Today, we are surveying our students to get their thoughts and opinions, and next week, we will survey our staff. I invite you to engage in conversations with your student about how they feel about a block schedule. More details will follow next week.

2: Success In the Oriole's Nest This Week
|
|
Ja'Mere, Grade 11, has managed to successfully utilize the Oriole's Nest and Learning Center for the past few weeks. In these weeks, he has worked with the GLCs, teachers, and students to learn how to turn his grades around before the end of the semester. Sprouting from his hard work, Ja'Mere has managed to flip nearly every class grade significantly. Specifically, he raised his percentages by +71%, +57%, +35% and +46 in different classes. Now that’s what I call success! His hardwork and determination has been noticed and appreciated by the school staff. Keep up the great work, Ja’Mere!

3: Target Hybrid Date for Secondary Students and Staff
|
|
Superintendent Osei communicated today that February 22 has been named as the target start date for secondary students to return to the building in a hybrid model. This is only a recommendation at this time and will need to be approved by the School Board at the January 25 School Board meeting. We anticipate bringing back 9th and 12th graders first, followed by juniors and sophomores at the high school.
Being that this is a target transition date, it is subject to change pending Board approval and our ability to meet our Educational Delivery Model Considerations. Specifically, the health and safety consideration will be key to this target transition date as we are expected to follow the same protocol and parameters listed in steps one through five of the Safe Learning Plan guidance to determine our educational delivery model. This means that the cases per county data would need to be lower than 30 cases per 10,000.

5: Registration Information for Grades 9-11th
|
|
Current 9-11th graders should watch for a mailing with information on the class registration process for the 2021-22 school year. New this year, all registration will be done through the Park Connections class. Students will learn about elective options, understand how to make course selections and input course requests into Powerschool.

6: Winter Athletic Spectator Information
|
|
With winter athletic competitions beginning, please know there will not be any "walk up" admissions allowed. The events that spectators are allowed at, home or away, will be limited to predetermined family members of the participants. Many of our events will be streamed on Park TV's YouTube channel.

9: Class of 2022-Parents/Guardians

Our school partners with Genesys Works, a paid internship program and we are excited for the class of 2022 students to join!
What is Genesys Works?
- A program to gain professional and business technology skills while gaining college credit during summer training (8 weeks - 5 days a week - 4 hours a day)!
- A paid internship where you could make $15,000 your senior year of high school at a 12-month internship at a major corporation like, Target, Medtronic, Cargill or 3M!
- A support system where you receive post high school planning support and high school credit (2 credits) - can be used as your 5th class and you will be excused from school after 4th hour to go to your internship site.

St Louis Park Esports saw a lot of success this fall ranging from getting new star recruits from our freshmen class to seeing the established teams progress and improve from last year. Although covid hit us, esports was still able to run without much hindrance, which provided a program for our kids when many others had to be postponed.
From a coaches perspective the best part of this year was seeing the friendships and comradery that arose from tackling these new challenges together, but from a competitive perspective there was a whole lot more to get excited about!
Our Rocket League team made up of Nate S, Jonah S, and Jacob A had an amazing season where they were able to take home second place in the MN state championship after a huge upset win over St John's Prep!
We also had every single member of our Super Smash Bros team make it to the state tournament where only the top 16 players qualified. This included #3 seed Cole B and his teammates Carlitos A-S, Tommy R, and Truman F.
Last, but in no way the least, did we have an absolutely incredible rookie performance out of Ellie S who finished top 16 in the National Minecraft league! Not only is she one of the best players in the country but she also was the top rated rookie player and one of the very best freshmen players in the league!

Please go to gradsmn.org to order your cap and gown now. FINAL deadline date is January 29, 2021. There is no charge to families. We order our cap and gowns from Jostens and due to the situation with the pandemic, they need to have this information as soon as possible. 19: Purchase Your Yearbook Today!

All students, purchase your yearbook today! Yearbooks provide a unique reflection of the school year, and this year is one to remember for years to come. For the 2020-2021 school year, yearbooks will only be sold online due to Covid-19 restrictions and distance learning. Books are sold for $70, but there will be a $1 transaction fee added to the cost. The last day to buy a 2021 yearbook is January 31, 2021. Sales will be closed after this day.

20: Keep Your School Nurse Informed
|
|
Our Health Services Team is here to support staff and students - even during distance learning. Public health agencies at the state and county levels are overwhelmed with the current number of positive COVID cases and may not be able to answer questions in a timely manner.
The Licensed School Nurse and Health Aide at the high school can answer COVID/illness related questions, work through guidance given by the MN Department of Health, provide information on COVID testing sites, and assist with contact tracing and investigating.
