Greetings High School Families;
School started on Tuesday and we were elated to meet many enthusiastic students. Some parents accompanied their students as well. Students left the building with their individual boxes of textbooks, supplies, and class materials together with a connection with at least one caring adult, their Park Connections teacher. Many picked up Chrome books after proudly demonstrating the ability to log into their accounts. Students lined up on the socially-distanced floor markings in the Activity Center to get their pictures taken and students signed their names using orange or black Sharpies on their new class banners, which will be hung in a prominent place in the school.
Teachers expressed their enthusiasm about the opportunity to get to know individual students and begin building relationships. Those meetings, whether in person or virtual, provided an opportunity that had not previously been possible when all students returned at once. This reinforces my belief that we have been given an opportunity to create the changes we wish to see in education to better meet the needs of our students.
Welcome back students and families, and best wishes as you and all of your teachers, engage in learning together while utilizing the new and ever-changing technological tools that have become available to us.

This year, 2021 seniors will be able to submit their own portrait free of charge. Seniors MUST submit their chosen portrait through the Google Form provided on the Echowan website, under the senior pictures tab, ensuring that it meets all requirements.
Portraits can be professionally taken through a senior shoot, or you can use any photo you like! We also have many Echowan photographers on staff that would be more than happy to take senior pictures for free. Please contact us through email at echowan2021@gmail.com if you would like to choose this option and we will set you up with one of our photographers.
ALL SENIOR PICTURES MUST BE SUBMITTED THROUGH THE FORM BY OCTOBER 21ST!

Five St. Louis Park High School Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists |
|
Congratulations are in order for five St. Louis Park High School seniors who have recently been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program as National Merit Semifinalists. The five seniors are Thorwald Anderson, Daniel Goldenberg, Gabriel Kaplan, Dahlia Krebs, and Joshua Krueger. They are among 288 students from Minnesota and approximately 16,000 students from across the country to be named semifinalists this year.
National Merit Semifinalists are selected based on scores from the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) and are now eligible to compete for scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be awarded in the spring of 2021. Semifinalists score in the top 1% of the approximately 1.5 million students who took the PSAT as juniors.
Semifinalists will be notified in February if they have advanced to Finalist standing. Then, beginning in March and continuing to mid-June, around 7,600 students will be notified that they have been selected to receive a National Merit Scholarship award.

In lieu of in-person events due to COVID-19, St. Louis Park High School will be holding Virtual Family Nights in September for parents/guardians of students in grades 9-12.
Grade 10 | Tuesday, Sept. 15 | 7-8:30 p.m.
Grade 11 | Wednesday, Sept. 16 | 7-8:30 p.m.
Grade 12 | Thursday, Sept. 17 | 7-8:30 p.m.
During these events, we will discuss pertinent information relevant to each grade level.

PowerSchool for Parents/Guardians
Access to your Powerschool public portal account will give you the ability to update important contact information, access your student's meal account and make payments online, view your student's most current bus stop information, register your student for athletics and pay for student athletic fees. Instructions about how to set up your PowerSchool account are available at www.slpschools.org. You can go directly to the PowerSchool Public Portal at www.slpschools.powerschool.com to begin the registration process. If you need assistance contact Deb Muralt at muralt.debra@slpschools.org.

Schoology for Parents
St Louis Park Schools use Schoology, a digital learning management tool that creates online classroom community and enhances student engagement. The PSAT is planned for Wednesday, October 14. Sign up and cost information will be available by October 1. If we are not able to offer in October due to current guidelines, there is the potential for a test date in January and more information will be shared at that time. The PSAT is to qualify students for National Merit Scholarships when taken in 11th grade. Students who are in the top third of their class and/or have over a 3.0 GPA are encouraged to take the test. Tenth graders who are in the top 25% of their class should consider taking the test as well as a practice for 11th grade. The PSAT can also be used as a practice test for the SAT.

Change to Chill (CTC) is a free, online resource offered by Allina Health that provides tools and resources to help teens figure out what stress is, what causes it, and, most importantly, how to manage it. The website offers a wide variety of activities and information for both teens and caring adults around topics such as mindfulness, guided imagery, practicing gratitude, resiliency building and more. Are you a competitive gamer? Do you like to play video games and want to try out competing with a team of your classmates? Maybe your school activities and sports have been canceled due to COVID, and you are looking for an activity that is 100% risk free of the virus. Consider joining SLP's nationally renowned esports program and play with friends and other students in a large variety of games, in competitions big and small, local and nationwide! Hey and just maybe you can be like some of our graduates who have gotten their college paid for by playing video games through this program! (yes that actually is true!)

PEAC meetings are with the principals and various timely guests to learn the latest about what's going on at the high school, share insights and connect with other parents to help support students. This group also supports teacher appreciation and conference meals.
Another avenue for communication is "Coffee with the Principal". These virtual events will happen throughout the year. Mark your calendar for the first 2 dates:

Free Meals for Kids During Distance Learning |

While the District is in a distance learning educational delivery model, students and families will be able to pick up FREE MEALS (breakfast and lunch) at any of the six schools on Mondays and Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. In accordance with USDA guidelines, you must be a parent or guardian of a child (birth to 18) in the District in order to pick up these grab-and-go bag meals.
