WHAT’S ON MILES’ MIND
Words are important
By Miles Jaye

I recently wrote an essay on the topic of books. I used the principle of forced obsolescence as a backdrop or canvas on which to paint a picture of a thing suffering from gradual or rapid decline, depreciation of purpose and the resulting loss of useful value. The combustion engine and automobile forced horses out as the number one mode of transportation. Gunpower and guns forced swords, knives and the bow and arrow out as weapons of choice. That’s forced obsolescence!
OUR VOICES
When 95 percent equals zero
By Sen. Royce West

Over the next week, it is likely that a new map which will determine district boundaries for Texas’ U.S. House delegation will reach the desk of Governor Greg Abbott. It will arrive over the protests of my Democratic colleagues in the Texas Senate, because the many factors to be considered in redistricting, including population growth, race and ethnicity, do not add up in the new map.

Focus turns to raising money, financial accountability in Haiti quake recovery
The Haitian Times

After Haiti’s 2010 earthquake, when billions of dollars in aid were squandered by major non-governmental organizations or awarded to American contractors, Haitian-Americans watching from aboard learned to demand accountability when it comes to helping Haiti. This time around, many of these Haitians-Americans, like Garcelle Menos of Brooklyn, are choosing to work directly with groups they feel they can trust.

The Path

As we walk through life's journey,
we leave footprints.
Some just show where we are going.
Others redirect us when we get lost.
Still others remain
to guide those we leave behind.
I see your footprints.
Will you/they see mine?
