Construction Updates

Construction on the 69Express project is in the final stages, and portions of the corridor are being shifted into permanent configurations. Please be mindful of roadway changes as you drive the corridor.

Final surface work on 135th Street was completed at the beginning of the month, and the roadway is now open in its final configuration. The 167th Street interchange opened to limited traffic Nov. 10, returning U.S. 69 to two lanes in each direction and opening the new ramps to and from 167th Street. One lane on 167th Street is open in each direction. Work should be completed at the 167th Street interchange by mid-December. Noise wall work is nearly complete throughout the corridor.

Newly paved trails are visible in this east-facing aerial view of updates at the 135th Street and U.S. 69 interchange.

In November and December, drivers should expect to see construction crews focused on finishing touches such as overhead sign structure installations, final roadside grading, final pavement marking and completion of trails at 135th Street and 132nd Street. Testing of the new express lanes tolling system, now underway, will continue in December and January. All construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.

KTA and KDOT Working Together

The Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) is the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) tolling partner for 69Express. KTA’s mission is to provide safe, economical, high-quality transportation services to customers and to deliver customer-driven services with user fees (tolls). KTA and KDOT share the goals of providing safe travel for all drivers and using financial resources to maximize benefits to stakeholders now and into the future.

The KTA recommends drivers who use the U.S. 69 express lanes use a KTAG or other compatible transponder. Using a transponder like KTAG ensures two-axle drivers will receive the lowest rate on tolls and have a seamless, cashless toll payment experience.

Throughout the next few months, you’ll see tolling technology crews driving the express lanes for testing to ensure the technology works appropriately prior to opening.
