Express Lanes Explained

1. Toll Sign

Toll signs display the current price to utilize the express lane. Rates adjust based on express lane and general-purpose lane congestion to maintain free-flow traffic in the express lane. Drivers with a KTAG or compatible transponder will pay the rate displayed on the sign when they pass it. Vehicles identified by a license plate will pay a higher toll. Tolls also are higher for vehicles with more than two axles.

2. Entry and Exit

Overhead signs and breaks in the double white line show drivers where they can enter and exit the express lanes.

3. Tolling Technology

Trips in the express lane are recorded electronically, and tolls are assessed based on the rate at the time the driver enters.

Construction Updates

Frequent ramp closures at College and I-435 are nearing an end. These closures were necessary to complete bridge work and allow crews access to one of the major construction points along the corridor. Overnight on Tuesday, July 29 and Wednesday, July 30, all northbound lanes of U.S. 69 between College Blvd. and 103rd Street will be closed. The closure will be in place from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.  All closures are weather-dependent.

Work on the U.S. 69/167th Street interchange continues. Drainage work, grading and paving will continue in this area for the next few weeks.

Where are Express Lane Access Points?

Express lane access points are the specific locations where drivers can enter and exit the express lanes. Double white lines separate the express lane from the general-purpose lanes, except at marked locations where dashed lines indicate express lane entry and exit points. These access points between the express lanes and the general-purpose lanes will support smooth entrances and exits.

Drivers on southbound U.S. 69 can enter the express lane at 103rd Street or at Blue Valley Pkwy. Southbound express lane drivers can exit to 135th Street or at the end of the express lane at 151st Street. Traveling northbound, drivers can enter the express lane north of 151st Street or at Blue Valley Pkwy. Northbound drivers can exit with a direct connection to Blue Valley Pkwy. or into the general-purpose lanes near Blue Valley Pkwy. for access to 119th Street/College/ I-435 before the express lane ends at 103rd Street.

Crossing the Line

What happens if a driver crosses the double white line and passes into the express lane?

Everyone who enters and exits the express lane, no matter how briefly, will be charged for using the tolled lane. The express lanes will be clearly marked, and signs along U.S. 69 will inform drivers that crossing the double white lines (which mark the express lanes) is illegal. Law enforcement may ticket drivers who cross the double white lines.

Trail Updates

To ensure pedestrian safety, some trails under U.S. 69 have been closed during construction. The timeline for local trail openings:

  • The Tomahawk Creek trail is scheduled to open in Summer 2025.
  • The Indian Creek Trail will reopen with the completion of the southbound U.S.69bridge in late Summer 2025.
  • The trail that runs past Heartland Elementary on the west side of U.S. 69 will reopen following noise wall completion and restoration in Fall 2025.
