Construction Updates

Crews drill shafts for foundations that will support new piers for the bridges at 167th Street and U.S. 69.

Construction is progressing quickly as the end of summer nears and we continue through the final phase of the project. KDOT appreciates drivers’ patience and awareness while navigating closures and the work zone.  Please watch for crews as paving work and noise wall installation/painting take place throughout the corridor.

Work on the U.S. 69/167th Street interchange is ongoing. Drainage work, grading and paving will continue in this area for the next few weeks.

Express Lanes Pricing

If tolls are set too high – higher than drivers are willing to pay – very few will use the express lane. As shown in the top line of the graphic below, the express lane is nearly empty, and the general-purpose lanes become congested.

If the tolls are set too low, as shown in the middle line of the graphic, too many drivers will use the express lane, and all lanes will become congested. Performance is the same as it would be with one additional general-purpose (toll-free) lane on U.S. 69.

When pricing is set correctly, the right number of drivers use the express lane. Traffic is removed from the toll-free general-purpose lanes, and the express lane remains free flowing.

Setting Toll Rates to Manage Congestion

Balancing toll rates to manage congestion means rates vary based on traffic levels. The graphic below provides example costs anticipated for express lane trips on U.S. 69. Express lane rates vary based on time of day and whether a user is driving the full, 6-mile length of the corridor (151st Street to just north of 103rd Street) or only a portion of the corridor.

For example, a trip for someone driving the entire corridor length northbound during morning rush hour could cost $1.50. If someone only drives a portion of the corridor, such as from 151st Street to 119th Street, that partial-length trip could cost $0.50.

During off-peak times – mid-day, nighttime and weekends – the rates drop significantly because of less traffic. Rates drop to approximately $0.30 for a partial trip and $0.65 for a full-length trip.

In the southbound direction during afternoon rush hour, rates increase again as traffic increases. Rates are slightly higher in the afternoon because there is more congestion during the afternoon than in the morning rush hour.
