Construction Updates

Photo of noise walls along U.S. 69 half painted

Construction crews continue to work on noise wall installation along the corridor.

As the summer months come to an end, work on 69Express is at full speed! You may have seen last week’s progress, as crews continued to work on the U.S. 69 northbound bridge over I-435, widening along 135th Street for new turn lanes, installation of overhead sign structures throughout the corridor, and work continued to advance at 167th Street. KDOT appreciates your patience navigating the work zone.

Additionally, installation and painting of noise walls along U.S. 69 is taking place and is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

What Happens with Toll Revenues?

Federal and state dollars were the primary sources of funding to improve U.S. 69, but local contributions helped advance the project more quickly. Overland Park committed to a $30 million local contribution that would be paid through tolls collected on the Express lanes. Revenue collected from tolls will reimburse KDOT for the initial construction investment.  The City of Overland Park’s local contribution is expected to be met in the next 15 to 20 years.  At that time, City and KDOT officials will decide if the express lanes should be kept in place to continue managing congestion, in which case the additional revenue could be used to fund other improvements in the corridor.
