Issue #69 | Nov. 7, 2025

Construction Updates

The fall weather is cooling down, but construction on 69Express is heating up! The project is close to hitting a new milestone at the 167th Street interchange, with the opening of all four lanes on U.S. 69 and access ramps, including the new southbound ramps, scheduled to open the morning of Nov. 10.

Work at U.S. 69 and 135th Street will necessitate closures this weekend. All work schedules are weather permitting. Please visit 69Express.org for additional information.

Incident Response-Express Lane Details

People have asked KDOT about what to do in case of an emergency in the express lanes. In preparation for opening the U.S. 69 express lanes, KDOT worked with first responder teams from Kansas Highway Patrol, City of Overland Park and Johnson County to develop a plan for responding to incidents in the corridor. In coordination with KC Scout, KDOT will monitor U.S. 69 for incidents.

  • In situations that require traffic to be diverted into the express lane, the express lane will be set to a ‘free’ mode and drivers who are diverted into the express lane by law enforcement will not be charged a toll.
  • If an incident occurs in the express lane, the express lane will be set to a ‘closed’ mode, and drivers in the express lane will be diverted into the general-purpose lanes. Drivers in the express lane who are diverted will not be charged a toll.
  • During an incident, KDOT will work with KC Scout and first responders to monitor roadway conditions and return the express lane to normal operations when conditions allow.
  • As always, if a driver is having trouble, they should attempt to seek refuge on the right shoulder. If it is not possible or safe to move the vehicle to the right shoulder, use the left shoulder.
