Call for Celebrations and Submission of Events for the

Launched in April 2016 by the One Health Commission, the One Health Initiative Autonomous pro bono Team, and the One Health Platform Foundation, annual One Health Day has for the past 5 years provided a mechanism and reason for organizations, groups and individuals around the world to hold hundreds of events that raise awareness about the One Health approach* to complex challenges involving people, animals and the environment.
Earlier this year (2021) the One Health Platform closed its doors and is no longer able to help lead this critical annual One Health celebration. Many in the Global One Health Community may be wondering if this powerful annual observance will continue. The answer is a resounding YES!!!
In 2020, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic (or perhaps ‘because’ of it), and even though in-person gatherings were not encouraged, over 90 global events, were held to help the world understand the urgency of implementing the One Health paradigm shift. There were assuredly even more than that as there are ‘always’ events happening around the world that never get officially registered. As revealed by last year’s events and by the number of popular media articles about the pandemic calling for One Health (see COVID-19 and One Health), the world is demonstrating that a One Health way of thinking and acting, at all levels of academia, research, industry, government and policy, is profoundly needed now more than ever.

Anyone, from academia to government to corporate to private individuals, can plan and implement One Health Day Events and they can be organized any time of the year; they do not have to fall right on 3 November. Online registration is free and use of the One Health Day fliers and logos in many languages is encouraged. So don’t forget to Register your event to get on the map!!!
Each year students are encouraged to envision, plan and implement student-led One Health Day events and, if desired, to enter them into an annual student events competition for cash prizes.
The winning team of the 2020 One Health Day Student Events Competition and a $2,000 Cash Award is the Standing Committee on One Health (SCOH) of the International Veterinary Student Association (IVSA) Chapter at Pookode Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in Pookode, Wayanad, State of Kerala, India. This team of 18 students from multiple domains met all the competition criteria. The title of their project was Building Next Generation Student One Health Leaders for Healthier Planet: A Month-long online event to commemorate One Health Day 2020.
Today the One Health Commission and One Health Initiative Planning Team is reaching to the Global One Health Community encouraging more events than ever to be brought forward in 2021 as a testament to global support and as a ‘Call to Action’. As in 2020, in person One Health Day events are not encouraged unless they can be carefully planned for safety against COVID-19. However, as demonstrated in 2020, many possibilities exist for posters, YouTube, social media, radio and TV campaigns and online educational webinars to raise awareness of what One Health is and to educate about many One Health topics. In 2021 there will be one student event cash award of $1,000. Any questions about One Health Day should be directed to Regional One Health Day Points of Contact.
The Planning Team is also inviting organizational partners to step forward to help financially support the One Health Day web presence and annual maps. See contact information below.

About One Health Day
One Health Day is a timely initiative that gives One Health science practitioners and advocates a powerful voice for moving beyond current provincial approaches to emerging zoonotic infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, climate change, environmental pollution, food safety, comparative/ translational medicine and many other problems, to a holistic, default way of doing business.
*About One Health

One Health is a movement to forge co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agriculturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview.
