6th Ward family,

We understand that the news of Walgreens closing has raised real concern across our community—and rightfully so. Access to pharmacy services, everyday essentials, and a trusted neighborhood retailer is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. I want you to know that from the moment I received word yesterday (4/30) at 1:00 PM, I immediately began working—making calls, engaging stakeholders, and pushing forward every available option to ensure this space does not remain vacant and that our community does not lose access to critical services.

This is not a passive process. We are moving with urgency and intention. Conversations are already underway with potential operators, including both national and local partners, who understand the importance of serving our neighborhood with quality, consistency, and respect. My focus is not just on filling a space quickly, but on securing a strong, sustainable presence—one that reflects the needs, values, and long-term wellbeing of our residents.

I also firmly believe that the strongest outcomes come when the community is part of the solution. I am open—actively and sincerely—to building a strong, sustainable partnership with community members, local entrepreneurs, and stakeholders who are invested in seeing this corridor thrive. If you have ideas, connections, or interest in being part of what comes next, I welcome that engagement.

We will not allow this moment to become a setback. Instead, we are treating it as an opportunity to bring in something even more responsive and rooted in our community. I will continue to keep you informed as progress is made, and I remain fully committed to ensuring that we move forward—together.

Spend in the Black: 

The 2nd Annual Spend in the Black brought thousands from across Chicago to 75th & King Drive for a powerful day of community and commerce. With vendors selling out, strong community support, and even the weather clearing up, it was a major economic success.

We’re grateful to Pastor Charlie Dates, Salem Baptist Church, Progressive Baptist Church, our dedicated staff, and everyone who showed up to spend and sustain Black businesses.

Economic Summit: 

Over 200 businesses were represented in the room for a powerful day of connection and learning. The panel discussion featured Commissioner Sharla Roberts (Procurement Services), Wendy Ryce-Smith (Liberty Bank), and Corey Phillips (Social Storm LLC), moderated by Alderman Hall. Attendees then engaged in breakout sessions, including insights from Alton Bell of Bell Tax, before hearing an inspiring keynote from Jemal King, who shared his journey and “9 to 5 Millionaire” mindset.

Red Line Extension: 

This is a historic moment for the Far South Side. After nearly 60 years of advocacy, the Red Line is finally being extended from 95th/Dan Ryan to 130th Street.

The 5.5-mile expansion will bring four new stations at 103rd, 111th, Michigan, and 130th, along with a new railyard and maintenance facility near 120th and Cottage Grove—unlocking greater access, opportunity, and investment for our communities.



This is more than transit—it’s long-overdue progress, and we’re proud to see it moving forward.

Lenart School Walk a thon: 

Lenart Regional Gifted Center hosted an exciting Walk-a-thon, bringing the entire school community together for a day of energy, fun, and friendly classroom competition.

6th Ward Senior City Hall

Starting Monday, May 4th the 6th Ward is launching Senior City Hall—a dedicated space for residents 55+ to get direct, in-person support with city services.

Whether it’s street repairs, sanitation, lighting, or other concerns, our office is here to help ensure your requests are heard and properly addressed.

Join us every Monday through Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the 6th Ward Office, 8541 S. State Street. Let us help you navigate city services and get the support you deserve.

In addition to these events, our office continues to support local entrepreneurs through appointment-only Business Office Hours every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:00 AM–1:00 PM, offering one-on-one assistance with business proposals, zoning, programs, and resources. Each of these moments reflects our shared commitment to building a stronger, more connected 6th Ward—where we show up for one another and move forward together.

Residents impacted by the August 16–19, 2025 storms will soon have access to in-person support right here in the 6th Ward.

The Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) is coordinating with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to bring a Disaster Loan Center to the ward office, tentatively scheduled for May 5 through May 16.

This resource will help homeowners and renters apply for low-interest disaster loans to support repairs and rebuilding.

While applications are available online, SBA representatives will be on-site to provide guidance, answer questions, and assist with the application process. Hours of operation will be 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Join us for an afternoon of fun, fellowship, and friendly competition at the Games and Good Times Luncheon! Seniors 55+ are invited to come together for music, classic games, and a complimentary lunch in a warm and welcoming environment.

Free Monthly Produce Giveaway – 2026 Schedule

The Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation invites residents to its Free Monthly Produce Giveaway at the Healthy Lifestyle Hub. Fresh, seasonal produce is available while supplies last, helping support healthy eating and wellness in the community.

ComEd Power for Good Grant Program

Applications are now open for the ComEd 2026 Power for Good Grant Program, which supports nonprofits, schools, and public agencies working to strengthen communities. Funding opportunities include Green Region, Powering Safe Communities, and Powering the Arts grants. Applications are open through March 13.

The Low-Income Discount Rate Program (LIDR) helps eligible households save on gas, electric, and water bills by providing monthly bill credits based on income. Residents can save between 5% and 83% on energy costs through major Illinois utilities.

To apply, start by completing the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). If you’re already enrolled in LIHEAP, you may be automatically qualified for LIDR. Take advantage of this program to reduce your utility costs and ease monthly expenses.

The City of Chicago’s 2026 Festivals & Special Events calendar is your ticket to free, family-friendly fun all year long. From farmers markets and music festivals to film series, cultural celebrations, and holiday events, there are countless opportunities to enjoy arts, culture, and community across the city. All events are free and open to the public, with dates running from spring through the end of the year.
