Community Hope & Career Fair Success!

We're delighted to share the wonderful outcomes of our recent Community Job Fair! It was an event filled with hope, opportunity, and tangible results.

We are thrilled to announce that thanks to the collective efforts of our community, a total of 12 individuals have been hired since January through connections made at the job fair. These hires represent not just job placements, but significant steps toward economic empowerment and prosperity for our community members.

The success of the job fair wouldn't have been possible without the participation of local employers, job seekers, and volunteers who contributed their time and expertise. Together, we demonstrated the power of community collaboration in creating pathways to employment and brighter futures.

Our Job Fair Series started with eight (8) employers in January and has since expanded to twenty (20) participating in February. We're proud to have representatives across various sectors such as government, Chicago Police Department, Chicago Fire Department, 6 Ward Workforce Partners KRA and CAPs, The Mayor’s Office of People with Disabilities, and more.

Opportunities are available in trades, management, retail, food service, healthcare, construction, and more.

I would like to thank everyone who played a part in making the Community Job Fair a success. Your support and dedication are truly appreciated.

Let's continue to work together to build a thriving community where opportunities abound for all. The next Hope & Career Fair will be held on March 21, 2024 at Tuley Park.

6th Ward Business Happy Hour

Excited to share the success of our recent Business Happy Hour, an event dedicated to supporting and empowering local businesses in our community.

The Business Happy Hour provided a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs and business owners to network, learn, and access valuable resources to help them thrive. Attendees gained valuable knowledge and connections to support their business ventures.

Highlights of the event included:

  • Tips and strategies for business growth.
  • Networking sessions that facilitated meaningful connections and collaborations among local businesses.
  • Access to resources and support services tailored to the needs of small businesses, including financing options, marketing assistance, and more.

The event was a testament to the strength and resilience of our local business community, and we're proud to have been a part of it.

Stay tuned for future events and initiatives aimed at supporting local businesses and driving economic growth in our community.

Empowering Our Veterans in the 6th Ward

Our first '6 Ward Veterans Commission' meeting held in February was a huge success! With representatives from all branches of the Military, including active and inactive duty, we're on a mission to support and recognize our Veterans.

Did you know? Our ward ranks 3rd highest in the city for housed Veterans (2719) but 6th highest for Veterans not signed up for any services. That's where we come in!

It is the goal of our ‘6 Ward Veterans Commission’ to change this narrative. Stay tuned for upcoming events including a Veterans resource/job fair, Montford Point Marine Memorial rededication, and ongoing services right here in our Ward. Together, let's honor and support our Veterans!

Faith Leaders Breakfast

Thanks to all who attended the Faith Leaders Breakfast last month. It was an inspiring gathering where pastors and faith leaders came together to connect, collaborate, and gain valuable resources to support their congregations.

During the event, we allowed pastors to discuss any essential tools and resources they need to better serve their communities. Our goal is to equip faith leaders with the knowledge and tools they need to address the diverse needs of their congregations.

The breakfast also provided an invaluable opportunity for networking and collaboration among pastors. By coming together, we strengthen our collective ability to make a positive impact in our communities and uplift those in need.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all the pastors and faith leaders who joined us for this meaningful event. Your dedication to serving your congregations is truly commendable, and we're grateful for the opportunity to support your important work.

Strengthening Schools: 6th Ward Principal Meeting

In a recent principal meeting, I gathered with local Principals to address the unique needs and requests of schools within our community. This collaborative effort aimed to ensure that every school in the ward receives the support and resources necessary for success. Stay tuned for updates on how we're working together to enhance education in our community!

Building Connections: Senior Living Facility Tour

We've been actively reaching out to our beloved seniors of the 6th ward, listening to their needs, and fostering valuable connections. Since the holiday season, we had the privilege of visiting various Senior Living Facilities, strengthening bonds with our community partners, and spending quality time engaging with seniors. Stay tuned for more initiatives aimed at supporting and uplifting our cherished senior community!

Onthe9 Run Crew leads runs on the Southside

South Shore, Chicago, IL – Onthe9 was created to provide a safe and encouraging space for runners on the Southside of Chicago. The group's founders, Neishé Russell, Tess Branklin, Danya Rosen, and Philip Weatherspoon formed the group to bring a sense of community to runners who enjoy distance running. Their mission is to make endurance running and movement accessible on the South Side through the pillars of inclusion, community, and health equity.

Saturday, February 24th marked the official launch of Onthe9 Run Crew. Over a dozen runners met at the historic Avalon Regal Theater for a 4.5-mile run from 79th & Stony Island to the Mahalia Jackson Court and back.
