Careless Driving: You Will Lose Your License
If you're stopped for a ticket, police may still ask if you know why you've been stopped, and you can look innocent and say you do not know why. That's because HB25-1243 that prohibited peace officers who make a traffic stop from asking if you know why you were stopped was postponed indefinitely in Judiciary recently. But if you hit a person when driving, with SB25-281, Increasing Penalties for Careless Driving, you will now lose your license for a year (mandatory). Law enforcement is also required to administer drug and alcohol tests as soon as possible if they believe careless driving caused a death. If a driver refuses the test, that will be admissible in court with no self-incrimination defenses allowed. So keep your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel, and drive safely out there. That's a heads up courtesy of Colorado Capitol Watch.
