Concert to celebrate Cal State LA’s 75th anniversary

Join us Friday, April 28, for a concert celebrating Cal State LA’s 75th anniversary and thanking President William A. Covino and First Lady Debbie Covino for 10 years of service to the University. The 7:30 p.m. concert at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex will feature the performance of works by alumnus Jack T. Cooper, ’87, ’89, and faculty members Paul De Castro, ’91, ’93, Sara Carina Graef, and John M. Kennedy. Registration is open through Monday, April 24, at 5 p.m. or until the venue is full. Please RSVP online.

AAPI Heritage Month celebration begins this month

Cal State LA is celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month from mid-April to mid-May due to the University's spring semester calendar and to ensure a full month filled with celebrations, advocacy, and education. This year’s theme is “Rising: Amplify and Uplift AAPI Voices.” Visit the AAPI Heritage Month website for the listing of presentations, screenings, activities, and performances.

Cal State LA Preview Day invites admitted students to visit campus

Cal State LA will host its Preview Day on Saturday, April 15, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to welcome all the high school seniors and transfer students admitted to Cal State LA for fall 2023. Admitted students and their families have been invited to visit the Cal State LA campus and meet University representatives from various colleges, student services departments, and student organizations. 

Cross Cultural Centers to host a Day with Alex Elle

Join the Cross Cultural Centers for a Day with Alex Elle on Tuesday, April 18, to connect, feel, and find joy in the healing journey. In her newest book, How We Heal, the author provides a roadmap for tapping into your inner child. The event begins at 10:40 a.m. in the University-Student Union, second floor, room 206, with a walk followed by a book reading and tea time. There will also be a book talk by the author at 4 p.m. in the University-Student Union Theatre. Space is limited, so please sign up to reserve your spot.

Staff Lunch and Learn on DEIB in the Media on April 24

Staff are invited to attend a Lunch and Learn event on Monday, April 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., exploring DEIB topics in media, hosted by the Staff Working Group on Belonging, Community, and Diversity. The discussion will be facilitated by Dr. Frangelo Ayran, associate dean of students, and Dr. Christopher Jackson, assistant director for residence life. They will use examples from TV shows, movies, and social media to explore issues such as sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia that we may also observe or experience as staff. Staff may register online by Friday, April 21.

WellBeingU Speaker Series with L.A. Rams sports psychologist

Join us for our next WellBeingU Speaker Series event on Tuesday, April 25. Learn from Dr. Carrie Hastings, mental health clinician for the Los Angeles Rams, who will delve into the fascinating world of sports psychology, sharing her experiences working with the Rams football team and providing strategies to improve your well-being. The event will be held in the Golden Eagle Ballrooms from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and lunch will be provided. Register for the event online.

Give blood at American Red Cross blood drive on campus

Students, faculty, staff, and community members can give blood on campus during the American Red Cross blood drive on April 19 and May 11, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The mobile blood drive bus will be in Lot 4. Schedule an appointment online. Appointments are strongly encouraged, but walk-ins are gladly accepted.

The Luckman presents a stand-up performance by celebrated filmmaker John Waters

John Waters, the filmmaker behind classics Hairspray, Pink Flamingos, and Serial Mom, returns to the Luckman with an all-new version of his solo stand-up performance on Sunday, April 23, at 6 p.m. Cal State LA students, faculty, and staff can purchase discounted tickets at the Luckman Box Office upon presentation of a valid Cal State LA One Card. For ticket information, call the Luckman Box Office at 323-343-6600. 

Register now to attend a community engagement webinar

Faculty and staff members are invited to a 90-minute webinar, entitled "Partnership Success: Community Partner Perspectives on Community Engagement." Hosted by LEAD California at Cal State LA, the webinar will take place on Wednesday, May 3, from 12 to 1:30 p.m., via Zoom. LEAD California is a state-based nonprofit dedicated to advancing civic and community engagement. Please register in advance to attend the webinar.

Silverman Gallery features an exhibit by graduate students in Art

The Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery at Cal State LA is hosting the Art Department’s 2023 Spring Graduate Theses Exhibition. This exhibit will be on display until April 19 and highlights the work of graduate students Boone T. Nguyen and Devanshi Purohit. The gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from 12 noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call 323-343-4040.

Submit spring or summer events for the University calendar

As you plan virtual or in-person events for the spring semester or summer session, please submit calendar entries to the Office of Communications and Public Affairs at [email protected] as soon as possible to allow time for inputting onto the online University calendar.

Counseling services available for campus community

Employees may find counseling assistance through the Employee Assistance Program, LifeMatters, by calling 1-800-367-7474 or visiting the LifeMatters website. Cal State LA’s company password is GOEAGLES. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) also provides services to students throughout the semester. Counselors will be available to address issues such as anxiety management, emotional wellness, mindfulness, and more. For details, call 323-343-3314 or visit the CAPS website.
